    Hi all

I have a bit of spare cash and I'm looking to make one or two upgrades to my current spec, which is:

    CPU - Intel Core i7 950 (3.06GHz, skt 1366)
    Mobo - Asus Sabertooth X58
    RAM - 12GB Corsair DDR3 XMS3 (triple channel, running at 1600MHz)
    GFX - XFX nVidia GTX280
    Main HDD - Crucial C300 128GB
Sound - onboard.... I know, I know :duh:
    Case - Corsair 600T

I want to be able to comfortably run 3 Eve Online clients with all graphics settings maxed. Those clients are run in windowed mode too and the game is installed on the Crucial SSD.

My first thoughts are swapping out the GTX280 (which has served me well since 2008) for either a GTX580 or 590. Is there any need to upgrade the mobo or CPU? Is a GTX590 overkill?

Nothing is overclocked at present and I won't be doing any overclocking until I get around to replacing the stock Intel cooler (work gets in the way of my play time!)

    Thanks in advance.

I assume you don't mean 3 monitors? As you can only do that on a gtx 590, other wise you need 2 cards in sli. but Yes if you don't mean 3 monitors, I would say the Gtx 580 would be perfect and spend the money you saved on an NH-D14 :D

Sorry yes, it's one monitor - Dell 2407 with resolution of 1920x1200.

One follow up question, I've just noticed that Scan has some 580's with 3GB - would they make much difference when running 3 clients?

Thanks for the quick reply :)

You want big memory for running that many clients, and also with Incarna it's become a big ass resource whore, so I think having your clients only open one at a time you should be ok, if you are using multiple monitor you might see some lagginess.

That being said I run 2 clients on 2 monitors at 1280x1024 and 1920x1080 with a HD 4850 and I can have one client with max setting and one with base setting and that runs ok, but to be honest I barely ever run my client any higher then low settings . (Big fleets battles rape any card dual boxing with max effects and brackets)

Sorry for my stupidity but what is 3 clients? is that like 3 windows open at once?

and Assuming one monitor, no it wouldn't make a difference, at sort of 2560 x 1600 resolution and upwards then yes you would need the 3GB of ram on the GPU

You can run multiple instances of the game and alt-esc between them on one monitor, or have all three up on three monitors. I have 3 subscriptions to Eve and I'm running one monitor and alt-escaping between them.

If in fleet ops, I'd only run one client at a time or two at most. But for some mission-running, I'd like to use all three and not worry about any graphics lag.

That's the thing with Eve, it's never too late. You don't need to have been playing for 7 years to be any good. Even the player with the most skillpoints will get slaughtered on his or her own by other players of any age.

Getting skills to lvl 4 is easy and at that level you're more than competent. What takes ages is getting higher rank skills from lvl4 to 5...

    Anyway, I digress...

Eve is a chore though, thats why I stopped. As Yahzee discribes it 'it's like having a second job you pay for'.

As for the upgrade, wont your internet connection really be the weak link?

My net connection will be the weak link? Granted, living in Milton Keynes puts me at a severe disadvantage, but my 2mb line should be able to handle 3 Eve clients, shouldn't it? Upload speed is 0.5mb.

Also, I know vram is important for the higher screen resolutions, but doens't it help when running multiple Eve clients (or other games), or is it purely about what's being displayed on screen at anyone one time? (the goes back to the 1.5GB vs 3GB flavours of the GTX580).
