I'm building a workstation pc around the core 2 Q6600 and was wondering how powerful of a video card I need. The programs I mainly use are photoshop, illustrator, premier, after effects, ableton live, cubase, and maybe some 3dsmax. I won't be playing any games so I figure I'll go cheap on the card, maybe a geforce 7300gs, and use the extra money to upgrade from no-name ddr2 667 to corsair xms ddr2 800.... would this be a good choice? I'll be running a 22" samsung 226bw LCD, is this going to be a problem for the 7300gs?

Also, what determines how big of a power supply you need? Would a 420w be enough to power the Q6600, 4 gigs of memory, and everything else?

Out of all those applications, the only one that will actually use the video card is 3dsmax - if you're OK with your machine not being fast at it, I'd say it's a good trade.

For the PSU, if it's a good name, it should run it - I'd trust a Corsair or Seasonic that small, but not a generic, no-name PSU. (like the ones typically included in cases)

Unless you're going to overclock the CPU, I don't think you'll get any benefit from ddr2 800 over ddr2 667.
