I'm currently running a bumped-up prebuilt system- I replaced the PSU with a pretty no-name 500 watt (Zumax? I got it for $50, so I don't think it's exactly brimming with quality) and put a 9800 GT in the PCI-E slot.

What's the best graphics card that can be powerd on a 500 watt PSU with one 6-pin?
(Also, I need to measure my case to find the longest card that would fit.)

For that matter, could we compile a list of GPU card lengths, and have it stickied?

    Currently, I'd say the HD5770.

I was thinking along the same lines.

I need to get a ruler out and measure my case, though, I might be able to fit a 5850 if I get a new PSU as well.

    Incidentally, what is your PSU?

I'd side with the HD4870, but seeing as it's a hair faster but more power hungry I didn't choose it.

You can always try to hunt for a HD4890, which still has plenty of stock, but it'll need 2 PCI-E power pins, and is pretty hungry in terms of power. You can push a HD4890 on that, but you'll need a molex--> PCI-E connector, and there might be the problem of overloading your PSU if it's a cheap one(never heard of Zumax).

You managed to find a PSU with one six pin PCI-e?!. From that I doubt its output is anywhere near 500w anyway...

You'd be surprised, my old generic 400w was 400w BUT there was only 216w available on the all important 12v rail :hehe:

I'm wondering how much my PSU can actually spit out...
Well the Bit-Tech charts says the 5770 is shorter than an ATX mobo and also eats up less power than the 8/9800 GT I'm running, so I think I'll be fine aiming for one.

I was meaning the total output, not just the 12v. Hazard a guess and its more like a 350-400 psu than a 500.

I would definitely agree that with that power supply since the true voltage output is probably a great deal less than advertised you would probably be happier getting the 5770, I have one and its an awesome card and its tiny (a lot smaller than the x1900 it replaced) and since its using a smaller nm chip its a LOT less power hungry than other cards.
