rightio, when i first got my card (in sig) it made a funny noise when i scrolled in IE
i was a bit put off by this at first but have gotten used to it
the noise is kind of a very subtle buzzing noise, and only does it when i scroll in programs (IE, acrobat, word etc)
i just found out that turning off smooth scrolling in IE stopped the noise

the card is fine other than that though, i have heard this from a few other 5900 owners

anyone know what is causing it?

edit: i think ill turn smooth scrolling back on, i like it better with the noise, i kind of miss it :D

edit: i did a really bad job of describing the noise it makes, but i really can't do any better, maybe if someone else's card does it they can try to descibe it?

and yet another edit: it does it at ctock speeds as well, and with any bios and has done it since i got it, and drivers and other hardware and everything has been changes around many times, so im pretty sure it isn't being caused by something else

    Hello

Does it make that sound when you are playing games ie intensive, antialiasing, and so on? Try it with v-sync off and hear if it makes that sound.

I think it could be that the circuitry, maybe one of the components, is bad - probably one of the filter capacitors. I guess the sound you are describing could be similiar to the buzzing of a lamp under dimming?

    not the same

    i have a gf4 Ti 4200 and it makes a hideous noise.
starts making a pinging noise like you here on when you tap a glass with a spoon. then after a while it stops and then i get a horrable gurning noise that stops and starts. any ideas how to stop it?

icarus, that my be something lodged in the can in you graphics card, have a look at it to make sure as that could easily damge the card

i have deduced that it makes a very (very very) faint *tick* noise every time it redraws a frame

when a game is pottering along at 200fps, it becomes nearly inaudible, when it is running at about 50fps it becomes a litle more noticeable
i hadnt noticed it in games before because i would normally have sound on and therefor not be able to hear it

i tired a bunch of diff games in a bunch of diff settings and they all make the noise

this is by no means a loud noise at all, if you had a louder than average fan or hard drive in your case it would be drowned out, i can only notice it when i stick my ear right up to the card with the side off

but if gainward says it's ok, i guess it's ok

and if it isn't that really doesnt make a difference as i have already voided the warranty in 4 (that i can think of off hand) different ways

I used to have the same problem. turns out it was IRQ conflicts and also having a VIA chipset on my mobo. if you are using an SBlive! and you have a VIA KT333 chipset it worth finding the PCI latency patch and trying that.

    ::EDIT::

:duh: just read what mobo/s card you have in you sig..
Remove the audigy and see if it continues for sure though

the card made the same noise in a different system as well
i used to have a problem with a kt333 and a live5.1 of clicking speakers, not sure if that is what you mean, but this sound is comeing from the actual graphics card itself

Mister_tad, I have that exact same card as you and mine also makes that sort of eek eek noise when using the mouse wheel to scroll up and down pages.

I never used the card with the stock fans on as I ripped them straight off and mounted a Maze4 block.

I did notice a rubber pad under the big aluminium heatsink which i didn't replace at first so automatically thought it was that so after a couple of days I thought i would replace it and see if the noise disappeared but it didn't make any difference.

Then I thought I might have been tightening the Maze4 down too tight but have tried it at different pressures and that didn't make any difference
    :sigh:

I'm at a loss really but I must admit I have grown quite fond of it and when I'm on my other PC I kinda miss it.

Just out of interest, what bios did you flash your card to a 5950 with and also did you have any problems??

Sorry I can't help with a cure to the noise but I can relate to it.

I used the leadtek flasher, and told it to ignore the fact that it was a different card

    I used a bios from a Gainward 1800 Golden sample FX5950u
not had any problems with it at all and it runs a treat at some pretty silly speeds, before flashing my max speed was 466/975
there is a huge performance increase with the new bios, because while the latencies are a little more relaxed the increase in the highest speed more than makes up for it, if you can trust benchmarks i can get 6800 in 3Dmark03 and around 51000 in Aquamark3, about 10-15% more than before the flash

from what i have read you can use any 5950 bios to flash the card, i just used a gainward one because i have a gainward card and it just makes sense, but im pretty sure you have to use the leadtek flasher

i think the main people that are having problems with the flash are the ones with the 700MHz memory, so the card just dies when it tries to run at 975, but you obviously wont have a problem with a gainward

i can send you the flasher and the bios if you are thinking of doing it to yours, get me on msn at: mister_tad (at) hotmail (dot) com or just drop me an email

if you turn off smooth scrolling it gets rid of the noise in IE

ahhh.........i should have mentioned that I already done it to my card using the 5950e400 nvflash without any problem at all, i was just interested to see which one you used and if you had any problems.

Not sure about the Leadtek flasher..........i just made a bootable floppy and added the nvflash to that and at A:/ typed flash.bat then obviously had to reset the bios and bobs your auntie........flashed :D

Must admit I was already getting some quite highish speeds and around the same in Aquamark but i have yet to start playing again to see what can be reached.

I wouldn't mind having a go with the 1800 Golden sample FX5950u flash so if you get a min you could send me it via e-mail (in sig) if you don't mind.

Cheers for the info though.......top man :thumb:

I had this problem once, turned up some of the capacitors on the mobo had split. Horrible high pitch whine, increased whenever the gfx card did anything intensive.. i.e. playing a game
