It seems lately that a strange noise has been coming from my computer (something like that of a wire in a fan). After inspecting it thoroughly multiple times I noted that the noise seemed to be eminating from the graphics card fan. However there seemed to be no obstructing wires or any wires in the relative area. The sound can get quite annoying but it seems to get more intense when playing any games although it doesn't seem to be affecting the performace of the card.

    Any ideas?

the voltages might be too high for that fan, which is causing the fan to spin much faster than it normally should. I had the same problem on my xbox, but with a few modifications, its pretty much silent. :dremel: is your friend.

If your fan is detachable then try taking it off and giving it a good clean - always worth a shot.

It's probably just a dodgey fan mate. How old is the card?

I agree, maybe you could unplug the fan to see if the noise stops. (only for a short time though!)

Just stop the fan with your finger - i bet the nosie stops.

I have had fans fail in this whiney way before, they can just fail...

    Hm...

I would remove the fan, but I have no idea how to get the little pegs holding them down off. They seem to be in two parts, you can push them together or pull them apart a bit but they don't come off.

Here a pic of what I'm talking about, the little black pegs on the corner of the gold fan cover. http://usa.asus.com/products/vga/v9280td/v9280td_l.jpg

i actually have that same card (the 128MB version) and the fan is whiney in general.... chances are its not failing.... its just being itself

as to getting the cooler off, i've found that a universal molex pin tool works wonders to popping the pegs out

mainly you need to compress the pin in towards the card, then squeeze the little pointed parts on the back together then push them out through the card...

tough to do at times, but once you get the hang of it, quick & easy

I've had two fans go out on my graphics card, one of them actually stopped, and I am glad I had my case open to catch it. But, my crystal orb is making VERY loud noises. Vibrating, grinding, etc. Thus is why I am replacing it with a Vantec Iceberq 4 non-pro (24dba, woot!). One thing you can try is getting some thick silicone oil, about 40-50wt (RC car shock oil) and pulling off the label covering the shaft and add some there. Few drops should do. This stopped the noise for a while, but I only had light spray oil.

If you want to have pictures of this, just look up the DIY Painted fan tutorial on this site.
