i have started to build up my new rj45 network (bye bye bnc) anyway i jsut got a lenght of crossover to runt inbetween the laptop & desktop (as a temp measure intil ican afford to do it properly) & ther enot talking i have tried netbeui, ipx/spx & tcp/ip on both machines (ie both machines have netbeui, both have ipx/spx & both have tcp/ip) but they still can see each other, i know there both sending information out as i can see the light on my laptops media coupler (the bit that lugs on to my laptopls network card) but they dont see each other, any ideas?

Get rid of ipx/spx you dont need it unless you play red alert. Set the ip on each card to say 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2, reboot.
Then try to ping each machine, if that works good, if not then uninstall tcp/ip and re-install. If that doesn't work un-install the cards and re-install them. Also if you can try another x-over cable, to rule that out.

if your not using the internet, for sake of simplicity only use NetBeui for the protocols, it has nothing to setup.. if on the net, use only TCP/IP, more protocols only confuse things..

Secondly have you tested the cable or tried another?
