Ok, so yet another question from me. I have the Ubuntu studio disc burned. I checked the MD5 Hash and its right, I burned it at 1x Speed and it said no errors. BUT. My PC won't boot from the DVD. Is it because its a DVD+R not a DVD-R? I've changed the boot priority to CDrom first, I even disconnected my other CD-ROM so the only drive is the DVD. It gets to 'boot from CD' then it hangs a while and doesnt ask me to hit any key, then it goes straight to windows. Should I burn it on a DVD-R? Are there BIOS settings I'm missing?
CDBurnerXP pro says it should do that automatically. I haven't tried a different program. I've downloaded DVD Decrypter and might try that.
Ok no, its just not working for me. Heres what I've tried so far: Burnt Ubuntu studio install discs 3 times using 3 different programs. None of them had an option to make the disc bootable, and none of them worked. I've used CDBurner XP Pro, DVD Decrypter, and Infra Recorder. I've used a DVD+R and 2 DVD-Rs to burn them and it made no difference. Burnt Ubuntu X64 and it didn't work. I've burnt at no higher than 4x, all my media is labelled 8x, and two of the discs were burnt at 2x. The ubuntu website says just burn the image like any ISO file, clearly I'm missing something big here because my PC just isn't having any of it. I know my drive can boot from CDs but either my burner can't handle DVDs, or the drive can't boot from DVDs, only CD. My drive is a Pioneer DVR-106D Now, pardon my french, but: WHAT THE **** IS GOING ON ARRGHHH!!!
Erm, I had this issue with a certain OS that usually comes in white books or big alu things, you sure the disks your putting in are clean and how about trying Nero ?
Got a disc of it downstairs, but I doubt it'll help much... Any particular version of nero to use? Edit: And I'm damn sure, I bought them today and have been taking them straight from spindle to DVD drive.
Seriously not in the mood right now. I've made 2 trips to the shops for media today, I've burnt 5 discs, I've downloaded 2 distro's, I've installed a hard drive, I've rerouted my cabling, I've spent 2 hours ****ing around with boot options, master drives, slave drives, at least 3 hours researching my DVD drive, researching my media, researching my PS2 because THAT won't read the discs either when I burnt some games to them to check if my burner was on the fritz, my room is full of dust, I've been sneezing all day, my nose is sunburnt, its been alternately way too warm and even warmer in here, and to top it all off my dinner was awful.
And nero didn't even have the good grace to work after all that. Burnt a DVD image in nero 7 and it ****ing did the same thing every other disc has today.
Maybe you've got a bad batch of discs. Does the disc read when you are in windows? You mentioned in the "Why does my pc feel the need to turn it's self on?" that you were experiencing the same problem as the poster - maybe it's related . Have you checked your bios settings? - made sure the Dvd drive is the primary boot drive? Also burning at 1x doesn't mean you will get an optimum disc. Most drives burn better at 2-4x.
I've burnt them at all kinds of speeds. At least one of them was burnt at 4x. As for bad batches of discs, I've bought a spindle of 50 DVD+R's today, sonys. And a 25 pack of Tesco own brand DVD-Rs. The DVD drive is, at the moment the only optical drive. I disconnected the other one from the system entirely to make sure the boot would read the DVD drive not the CD drive. My bios settings are correct also. If I disconnect the windows Hard drive from the PC and leave only the optical and an unformatted IDE in there, it just tells me 'Invalid boot disk, insert a system disk and press enter'
Have you got another boot disc, like a windows disc? If not you can make a bootdisc from an image here http://www.bootdisk.com/. Although I think they are only cd images. If they work, then you'll know for sure that it's the Ubuntu disc. You can then try redownloading it, or getting it from another source.
I already know this drive will boot from CD's, I've installed windows from them with this setup twice. Its not the downloaded files because the MD5 sum of the ISO file checks out against the list of checksums on ubuntu.com and the ubuntu studio website. Edit: And I don't have a floppy drive, if anyone suggests that.
The only explanation I can of is that you are just burning the iso directly onto the disc as opposed to loading the image with your burning software and then burning. Oh, and dvd decryptor is great software for burning images. Regarded as the best by many and it's free.
I already used DVD decryptor, and I've now burned the image, as an image, not a file, using the following programs, about 6 or 7 times. Alcohol 120% Nero 7 CDBurner XP Pro Infra Recorder DVD Decryptor Every time I've recieved the same result.
Must be your dvd drive. Burning the iso straight to disc should make it bootable, as it's a copy of a disc that's already been made bootable. Have you checked the jumper on your dvd drive? Is it set to master and on the last connector on the ide cable?
Probably, Exactly, Yes, and Yes, in that order. But it shouldn't do this because I know the drive can read DVDs, and I can't for the life of me think of anything that could go wrong with a DVD drive that would make it throw up errors like this. Surely it should be able to read the discs its burned itself. Especialyl if it can read from other DVD discs. Not to mention, it had no trouble seeing the files of the PS2 discs I burned, the problem there was with my PS2 being a Version 4, and hence not having the upgraded laser assembly...
