Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is refusing to start on my computer. It worked fine until this morning, at which point it stopped starting.

I have scanned for spyware and viruses, rebooted, and reinstalled the game, but it still won't start. When I try to start it (from the desktop icon or CD autoplay button or from the *.exe), the hard drive churns for a few seconds and the cursor changes to a CD, but nothing happens. The process list shows gta_sa.exe for a few seconds, but the game does not actually start.

    System specs are as follows:

    Gigabyte GA-7N400XP
    Athlon XP 1800+
    ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
    512MB RAM
    20GB IBM Beskstar 7200RPM
    Samsung CD Burner/DVD Player

The strange thing is that the game was working yesterday, and now has suddenly stopped. Any ideas are appreciated.

When you say it 'stopped starting' do you mean you double click the shortcut and nothing happens?

Try uninstalling and then reinstalling it. Your save files will remain.

He said he reinstalled it. Reboot, bring up task manager and kill off every unnecessary process and try again.

I tried everything that you guys posted, but they didn't help.

Then, unexpectedly, it started the next day.

Yep it's a very common problem. Go to your save game directory (in My Documents) and delete the config file for the game settings (controls etc) and try again. I SHOULD start this time. However be warned, your save file could be corrupted. This happened to me a number of times for no apparent reason, however the common theory is down to some erratic hostility between the game and XP user accounts.
