I have a single Gtx 460 Ik I won't need upgrading really for a time to come but should I SLI them so I won't have to upgrade for even longer? Or should I get a single gtx 580 when the price comes lower in the future? I'll take radeon cards but im a fan of Nvidia cards but I did think of the Radeon 6970.
depends on who you ask.. I like single card configs myself- less driver hassles.. stuff works usually- sli your squeezing huangs nipples as he counts on luring unsuspecting peeps to buy twice as much as needed or if you run a greater res than 1080p.. you'll probably need sli or crossfire
A pair of 1Gb 460's in SLI really is a good deal. When they done the test they were out running cards costing more than a pair would set you back. Now the prices are so low it makes even more sense. I do agree with hippoz though about driver issues. I've got the XFX9800GX2, which is basically SLI in a box and that throws me the odd problem from time to time, but all I do is just reinstall the drivers and I'm good go again.
The only driver issues i've found with SLI is that sometimes you have to wait a few days for Nvidia to release a profile for just released games, even then there are ways round it especially now the the new drivers releases are getting few and far between. I'd be happy to SLI again, but now that the Fermi cards are more optimised to do Physx (the other benefit for me is being able to run Arkham Asylum with full Physx if I disable SLI so the second card can handle them) given a choice between 2 cards and a single one i'd probably go for the single, but then a few months/years later I'd probably want to SLI that.
id prefer to upgrade the gtx 460 think about it this way the next upgrade will hurt alot more when you resell your gtx 460's for pennies
Alright thanks guys, im thinking like you guys in a way. I bought the gtx 460 because its a great card and doesn't cost much at all thats why I thought why not sli it? I did see the tests also they where amazing in my opinion but I think maybe later ahead I might get a 580 and when that comes down i'll sli that. I'm never going to sell this card if I get a new one and it breaks atleast I have a card I can rely on Gtx 460 Cheesecake
The GTX460 should be plenty honestly. Unless you want MASSIVE amounts of AA or extremely high resolutions, the GTX460 can handle most games quite well. Of course you could just give SLI a try, but it really comes down to how willing are you to pay for another card for a 70-80% increase on average.
460's would be fairly cheap now anyway i would imagine? I'd see what a second hand 460 is fetching, add that up to the cost of another one, then see if the resulting figure amounts to a 580/570
