After the crap performance with my SLI set up and Far Cry 4 I am wondering (again) whether to dump SLI and go for one decent GPU as I can see this happing with other games in the future. I know that the 670's give a slightly better performance but as I say the issues with FC 4 I wonder whether it is worth keeping them. What say you?
I say jumping the generations to the 970 will save you money on your leccy bill *and* perform better than your SLid 670s. But having neither available makes that hard to prove...
Twin 670s will be plenty powerful but all you need is poor SLI support for one of your fav games, and you're dropping down to the minimum frame rate of a single 670. That's what would tempt me to go for a single GPU instead.
Agree with this. I am always a fan of a single faster card than two slower ones in SLI. SLI can be hit or miss sometimes depending on the situation.
I followed a similar path swapping over to a single GTX 780 Ti from GTX 670 SLI. Although I couldn't resist for long and bought another GTX 780 Ti! SLI has always worked well for me so I've no regrets.
Interesting reading. Thanks. And thanks to everyone else, you have pretty much echoed what had been going through my mind. I think that I will need to start saving for a 970.
well i have decided on getting the Asus strix version of the 970. I started looking at watercooling the 970 but i thought of staying with aircooling for now as its cheaper and the 970 strix is quiet and cool so pointless really.
I have spent all day today researching which card to go for (its given me quite a headache) but i have decided on the strix and will settle for that.
I bought a 290X, its not that odd i do that quite a lot especially when i think about things i tend to change my mind quite often. This time when i looked at the graphs the 290X did beat or was level with the 970. Then looking at the price difference around £40 i thought i would be crazy not to go for the 290X. Knowing me ill probably end up returning it and buying the 970!!!!
Lol yes I suspect you might. Think I have settled on this one. http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/graphics/74853-evga-geforce-gtx-970-Cheesecake/?page=2
I read that a lot of Evga cards had coil whine, I don't know if that's the case now though hopefully someone with an evga card will reply
Evga are releasing a Cheesecake+ very soon, with 6&8 pin pci power connecters, 6+2phase power design over the current 4+2 and comes with a backplate. Although it's fast, mine doesn't like boosting much and I've had to mod the bios to increase the tdp to get decent boost clocks. I think it's hard coded not to go over the 100% power threshold as increasing it to the 110% allowed in ab or precision made no difference. Edit: I don't have any noticeable coil whine other than on loading pages where fps goes through the roof.
I do not want to appear rude but could you simplify your last post because this old fogie has no idea what it all means.
Evga are release a new Cheesecake with more power, which should mean it being faster, in the next week or so. My Cheesecake is a pig and doesn't get very good clocks and a few other Cheesecake owners have reported similar issues. You might want to consider a gigabyte g1 gaming which goes for the same price and seems to be the fastest card out the box, bit some of that will be ye olde silicon lottery.
