Since I got my new monitor 2 days ago (2005fpw @ 1680x1050) the graphics card keeps overheating during games, especially far cry (which looks amazing on this monitor btw).

The settings are on max and at 1680x1050 I can get about 120fps average (haven't seen it fall below 70) and I don't (and shouldn't) really want/have to lower the graphics, but any idea why it is not supporting the new resolution very well? Previously it would run fine at 1280x1024 on my 17". The computer doesn't crash, but the game cuts off to the desktop, nvidia reports the gpu core at 70C and shuts down the game. The gpu is running at stock on a stock cooler - it's the xfx 7800gtx (the one I won here :D)

If it's necessary I might get a gpu cooler - was thinking this one as it matches my cpu cooler. Any comments on this one?

Erm.. 70°C is well within specification - the core is able to go over 100°C without issues. Are you sure that it's NVIDIA's drivers that are shutting it down?

I've tried changing the threshold but it won't let me. Every time the game shuts down the temperature control says 70C exactly. I thought 70C was within the threshold, but it's always 70C. The cpu temps are below 30, I'm not sure why this is happening. And it's only started 2 days ago with the new monitor. The drivers are up to date too.

Might do one day once I get more money and be brave enough (I cringe at the thought of a leak :eeek: ). Probably not on this system, but the next one I build!

Pah, proper leaks are a rare thing if you do it right ;)
That said, I had a leak last time, only small though - phew. ;)

are you sure its your gfx overheating and not your cpu .. due to the overclock is might be unstable or something :/ worth a try to down clock it to see what happens imo

Before I got my watercooling going on my 7800gtx:s they where over 85c when playing FEAR so I dont think its the nvidia driver that is kicking U out of the game. I did however have the same problem that U are experiencing.... I got kicked out of games and 3DMark... turned out to be my powersupply!!
changed powersupply and all problems were gone!!... couldnt say this is your problem but its worth a try!!

Is there another card very close to it? I read somewhere else that if there is not enough airflow between them then this can cause major problems?

Try installing some older drivers or reinstalling your existing ones. My GTX seems to load at extremely similar temperatures, so it might well be coincidence that it's always 70°C.

It could be caused by RAM. Since your purchase of the screen coincided with your Ballistix choosing to start dying, I would run memtest for a few hours to be on the safe side.

I have been playing FEAR for hours now (about 4 hours straight) on max settings with maximum framerate 100% of the time and I had no problems.

I finally finished Far Cry yesterday so the issue isn't a huge problem anymore, but towards the end of the game it still cut off back to the desktop, every time the graphics card reached 70C, even when I clocked the ram and cpu back to stock. I doubt the cpu is overheating as it averages around 30C on load (when it's overclocked).

I have done memtest for 3 hours and it passed, might go for longer overnight, or do prime95.

I have also rolled back drivers as well as reinstalling the latest ones, and have even did a full reinstall of Far Cry, still the same problem, but why is it that as soon as the gpu core reaches 70, the game cuts off - i have been monitoring it with my samurize config as well as the nvidia utility.

Don't know why I'm having this problem, but I don't think it's a cause for concern if other games work ok.

I might try pluggin in my parent's 17" to see if Far Cry works ok, but as I've finished the game I don't fancy replaying FC atm.

hitman, not sure if my ram is dying after all, it has started to get better, managing higher clock speeds, and windows is stable.

EDIT: Looking at my screenshots I suddenly realised I was playing the game at 1024x768 rather than 1680x1050, which far cry was playing at. I can't set FEAR to my monitor's native resolution, but might try other games to see what happens.

what sort of a power supply do you use with this system, it could be that.

520W OCZ Modstream. I doubt it is that as that is more than enough for an overclocked system.

Uh, no I'm not worrying really, it's the fact that I can't play far cry that is the problem!

I've got the Zalman Fata1lty AND a CM Stacker Crossflow fan, which helps loads, turning it off causes temps to increase to over 40. The fatal1ty and crossflow combined makes one heck of a air cooling system!
