I've had my 280 about 18 months, the PSU about 2 1/2 years.

Basically my monitors randomly turn themselves of, and the light on the back of the card goes red, I know this means its not getting enough power.

Its happened three times now and I cant see any correlation:

once about 5 minutes after playing TF2

once in the middle of watching a video

once just now when I was sat browsing the net

It hadn't happened for a bout a week and a half before just now. It started when I changed my system to i7 about three weeks ago.

The only solution is to reset the system, I did try cleaning the card out with compressed air.

So is my card or my PSU on the fritz? Should I even be running the system at the moment? here are my everest values:

see this is the problem, i dont have a spare one unfortunately. also the problem is very intermittent so if i was to borrow one i'd have to have it a good while. plus i cant think of anyone i know who'd have a psu with 8 pin CPU power etc.

I'm guessing a new psu is the answer here? I cant see anything to suggest its a known issue with the GTX280. Just seems a little strange that it doesn't happen when the card is under load.

Last time I saw a red light on teh GTX2** series, there a was a video of 3 of them benching Crysis non-stop on an infinite loop, one of the cards cooked itself and the red light came on..

Could be the PSU, but surely 700w is enough for a GTX280?

Maybe try an eraser (or rubber, pfftttt :D) along the card PCI-E contacts? White spirit afterwards to remove any leftover residue.

i have a desktop gadget that does this, havent noticed anything untoward.

when i tried using afterburner to change the fan profile the fan would jump to 100% but show 30% in everest ultimate

This has been happening pretty much since then, still very erratic and there seems to be no correlation between what is running at the time and the crash. Just happened in the middle of a round of BC2 so I'm really peeved now!

I dont have a PSU to test with, dont have a spare gfx card. In my situation what would you do?

would it be worth trying a new bios on the card?
