... Windows XP! OK, I seriously just installed Windows XP Home on to a KP6-BS running two Pentium 2 450MHz with 512MB PC133 RAM and a Diamond Viper V550 16MB AGP (w00t). Anyway, I went through all of Black Viper's Windows tweaks, and then installed AVG Free Edition and ran it. Then, I tried to get the updated drivers for all my hardware, but I just got the V550 drivers instead. Now the problems begin: Randomly, Windows XP does the "Countdown to Doom" (say that Winodws must be shut down because of some RPC error or something). This is very annoying, since I have gotten AVG to run three times, and it always finds a "Lovsan" virus, or something similar. I know what you are probably thinking: Oh, it's MSBlaster, just run Windows Update to fix it! Yeah. Windows Update is royally screwed, since the one built into Windows doesn't have enough time to download everything before the system gets shut down, and the website is even worse. It tells me that I have an outdated version, then proceedes to download the new one. However, when it is done downloading and installing, it brings me back to the download screen again. Very frustrating. So, case in point, does anyone know how to stop random shutdowns in Windows XP Home?
switch the rpc options to "take no action" in services under system administration this will stop it and then you can update and get the blaster fix.
That was quite uncalled for. What Bruno just gave you was the correct answer to your problems. You use the 'shutdown -a' command to stop the Shutdown, then you have time to patch your machine. You will need the KB824146 patch. Once that's done, run the removal tool and reboot. Once that's done you'll not get the shutdown messages anymore.
I could not get those things to download. That worked fine, thank you Does anyone know why the Windows Update website is foobar?
The Windows Update site isn't FUBAR. I used it myself last night. I'd guess you have another infection that is preventing you from getting to it.
In future if you get an email saying Red Hot Teen Action with a file attached claiming to be a JPG don't open it
If Windows Update doesn't work, try clearing your entire Internet cache (ie6>Tools>Internet Options>Delete Files (Delete all Offline Files). Might work after that, it worked for a computer at work the other day. Or for a more precise answer, what you could do is try and run the Windows Update and on that web page is a link to a troubleshooter. Note down the error number it gives (if the update page lets you get that far) and find it on the troubleshooting pages and it should give you an answer that'll hopefully clear your update problem. hth
