Hi everyone I think it cold be really helpful if we were to see a guide on how to build our own laptops. Not so much a guide on the build process, but where to buy hardware and what hardware to go for as I think it's a lot harder to find hardware for laptops than it is for PCs, and even then I'm not sure what to pick. Maybe just even a test of laptop graphics cards so people can replace their current ones with ones that they know are better. Thanks
Not really worth the time TBH. Building your own laptop doesn't hold the same benefits as building your own desktop, and it isn't nearly as easy or cost effective.
building your own laptop.. is actually disadvantageous. - You don't have good cases - You don't have access to great engenerring (See how easy teh Dell Latiude E600/4000 series is to change any parts inside, port location, magnesium allow body, very good cooling and so on, as 1 example among many) - More expensive - Difficult to find parts - lack of power management engenerring, many high end laptop allows you to use some software from the OEM, to communicate with the motherboard and cut the power of devices. For instance, what I do with my laptop, I set it to cut the optical drive, firewire, Express Slot, SD card reader, when I am battery (among other things but not realted to motherboard communication like set the LED LCD backlit from 60Hz down to 50z. Saves a nice ~30min. well you get the point. OEM's websites, sometimes (depending on your region and brand) offer top notch systems. Many high-end system are available in the small business section, as businesses wants clean system, premium (better than their home) technical support service, matte screen option, high quality and reliable. You don't need to be a business to order from there (no company will say "no" to a sale). Most "Home" consumers wants to pay the lest amount, no mater what... so you have junk on the system to reduce the price, crappy glossy screens, cheap quality, not great service, outsource tech support no mater what the time you call, and so on.
I read somewhere that in an old issue of CPC they showed you how to build your own laptop for £495. I would like to see this sort of thing again or at least more features on laptops. I know there are reviews of gaming laptops quite often but not many people are going to spend that much. Seeing as how in the Buyers Guides there are systems for all budgets, not just the £1,500 mark. On Ebuyer there are many laptops between £400 and £600 but I quite honestly have no idea how good they will be overall and in specific applications and I think more needs to be done to help educate people about laptops and laptop hardware. It's fine for you if you know about these things but I don't and I know I'm not alone because just today there has been a question posted in the hardware thread about what laptop to buy in the price range I have mentioned above. I think this is something a lot of people are interested in and need help with, as most of us are competent with desktop hardware and use desktops for gaming. Just my opinion.
