Im hopefully going to start a new project soon, since Ice Cube is hopefully on its last road to being finished (all the smaller less time consuming stuff left).
For my next one, I was hoping to have a door that splits, with the top half opening itself. Can anyone find one of the pneumatic pistons from Car boots on ebay? (UK)

I dont know where else to look :S

Yo dude ;) The pressurised gas lift is a favourite mod of mine. You'll want something from a hatchback so as to avoid launching parts of your case into orbit - mine were from a Pug 306.

    Try these; http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NISSAN-MICRA-...39:1|66:2|65:12|240:1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Also - be sure to find a strong latching mechanism. This is where mine fell down, ultimately leading me to just take the gas-lifts off and find some thumbscrews :sigh:

If you're good with electronics, you could turn a set of these into a locking mechanism:http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2-X-2-Wire-DO...39:1|66:2|65:12|240:1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

:sigh: Unfortunately, no. They were lost in The Catastrophic Laptop HDD Failure of 2007. And one of the gas lifts went on to be fitted into my Renault Clio... I'm afraid my project is assigned to the mod graveyard :p

When you say 'Gullwing' do you mean this or this?

I ask because for the latter, you could have a hinge along the lines of:

which you could also look into...

I think it would be the first, I cant see the second one working that well for that I want it for :S

:( Didnt you have a back-up? What case did you use? Sounds like a cracking build :)

I'd have thought a bit of scrap-yard diving would be a reasonable alternative for sourcing those things. Assuming, of course, you can't find any on ebay.

You could also go with electric linear actuators. You wouldn't have to worry about a strong lock that way. Though you would need a way to unhook one end encase of a power failure. You'd end up with a permanently sealed case.... Would be sweet to have the case open itself if it gets too warm, like the gun in Halo.

Sweet, I managed to find this:
    http://www.acpd.co.uk/sonceboz-linear-actuators.html

3rd one down? How do they work, do you make a circuit and then they go up and down, or have a switch for up and down?

it says it has an 'anti-rotation' device. would it be best to get one without that so you could still open the door manually? or is that not what it means?

It is possible to arrange a gas spring so that it holds the door closed but when you manually open it beyond a certain point it opens them the rest of the way.

Yea, that's not too difficult to do. You just have to make the mount on the door stand out. That would over center the extension tube and hold the door shut.

i was going to do something like this, but it would ruin the design i have for my case =[
as the way you need to mount the shock makes it so it needs a lot of room. and limiting the case size on the inside

basicly it takes up a lot of room to do it, so ull need a big case or lay it out very well.
