after a weekend of trying, i've finally gotten Mac OS X 10.6.4 (latest) fully working on my Compaq Mini 702EA (same as a variant of HP mini 1000). everything works, Atom speedstep, auto fan speed, sound, sleep, wifi and bluetooth, even the crappy webcam.

soooooo, what do i do with it? :duh:

so far, this netbook has been retired for 5 months. after graduating from uni, netbook has became a paper weight. therefore i see no harm in messing about with it. besides, windows 7 on it has became horribly slow over time, due to way too many development utility and demonstration stuff installed for uni projects. a reinstall is in order anyway.

i was hoping to try out iLife, there are speed issues and issues with lack of SSE3.

with OSX, it's a great net browser, same as with Win7 installed. what other software would work good on the hackintosh netbook? another question can be asked is what other software would work good on the 11 inch Air?

That was actually a support feature of the PS2, Sony used to sell a full kit for it, included kb, mouse, HDD, eth and os. This will only work ont he fat ps2's mind as the slims cant fit a hd.

With regards to the hackintosh, I'm not too sure. I was after a netbook but now the air is out I'm REALLY tempted by the base 11" model with 4gb ram. The price is a bugger though....I'd prolly see how I got on with OSX but proberbly just install win 7 or linux on it in the end.

i really would have bought the 11 inch Air if it had been released about 1.5 to 2 years ago.

the thing is, netbook (and 11" Air) are really easy to carry around, acceptable to use and (for netbook) cheap, so you don't care too much about getting scratches, hence i carried the netbook to lecture, without anything else, not even a bag.

the most use i've found for it now, is to browse the web on my armchair while watching F1 on my main computer's screen. purpose of this thread is: what Mac software is good for an underpowered machine?

and thank you, bulldogjeff. you have confirmed that i may have too much free time on my hands. may be it's time to buy a house with a garage, and start some serious modding.

Only reason I had was to use xcode and compile iphone applications I'd written in eclipse on my windows installation :p
Using a samsung nc10 for that and it ran surprisingly well.

For me I would use it for GNS3 for small scale cisco lab work for my CCNA. You wouldn't be able to emulate much but you can get away with not doing too much hands on practive for the CCNA.

I'd also use it for spotify streaming (via 3g) and XBMC when at work on a night shift as well as for Arduino programming.

I had an old Dell 9300 lying around and managed to turn it into a hackintosh. But it took AGES and endless installing and reinstalling to get it to work, and the wifi is still dodgy. It is pretty cool to run xcode on it though =)
