Exactly the same thing happened to my Astra. Had me scratching my head for a long while. Especially since it looked like blonde hair. It was also up to a metre long at points and was just traling behind the car without me noticing. :duh:

It was coming out for a few weeks and then stopped completely. The car seems okay and it isn't really any louder so I've not done anything about yet. This was sometime during the summer.

it's the sound deadening in the silencer. they are usually packed with fibreglass but can be packed with steel wool to reduce the sound a little more. I repacked a MIVV carbon-fibre muffler about a week ago and that looks exactly like the packing that comes out (only a bit more screwed). Just repack the muffle and all should be fine. If there isnt a perforated pipe with hurdreds of small holes through the middle of the silencer it may go toward explaining why this stuff is falling out....it should be there :D

Depends largely on the car, a new backbox for mine is about £12 from most motor factors.

They're called fart cans. They're on every single Honda and Acura here in Canada.

It's sound insulation from your exhaust, most likely the last box. I suggest checking out the rest of the exhaust aswell (pipes, other boxes), check for rust and weak spots. I suggest replacing everything that needs replacing on your exhaust... and do it yourself it will save you quite a bit and it's an easy 1-2 hour job. The box itself should cost less then 100€.

    Good luck.

I don't know anything about cars, so be nice:

My Dad has a single seater hillclimb car, inside the exhaust stuff that looked just like that image is wrapped around a pipe that has lots of little circular holes in it. It looked like insulation, but thicker and a lot tougher. Heatproof obviously. Anyway, after he managed to crash the car, he saved a load of parts, including the exhaust, which started doing the exact same thing. My guess is that the pipe with holes in has cracked and is now spewing out what it was previously holding back.
