Is it possible to have a RAID configuration on two IDE drives on the same cable and can I keep my SATA drive separate from the configuration. :wallbash: :worried: :sigh: :duh:

I wouldn't recommend RAID'ing two IDE disks together on the same cable. Data can only travel to one disk at a time on the same IDE cable, which will cause performance problems.

I think both of these are right. Pretty sure you can raid them, but it is a bit pointless if you are using the same IDE channel.

Unless you are using RAID for what it is... Redundancy...

Indeed true. I only ever use raid for performance. I back up for redundancy, dont see the need to back up in real time on a home pc. Others may disagree of course.

I still suspect that RAID1 performance would suffer over a single IDE channel in any case.

Yes, but performance will still be halved over using 1 disk on each channel.

Redundant Array of Inexpensive Devices... no performance in there... If you want performance, get an SSD

You miss my point, why would you want to halve the performance of an already slow disk on an already slow interface?

Are you suggesting that RAID can not perform? Tell that to my server. It can outperform a great many SSDs... except for seek times, and random small file writing of course. Sometimes for large file transfers... a fast RAID array rocks.

Thank you all for your replies and the advice. I only wanted to use them for back up.
