Recently ran in to a few problems with handbrake. Once i converted a DVD to MKV i am sometimes unable to re-convert the MKV file - screen aspect all skrews up and it flags up an error (ill post the exact error when i get home). settings i use are: MKV, AAC, CF:17, and loose anamorphic i think everthing else is default. Doesnt happen with every video i convert but id say its 30-40% of the videos ive got. The MKV file plays back just fine in windows media centre and VLC so no issue as far as i can tell with the encoding process. anyone got any ideas ? thanks in advance
You'd probably be best just compressing the dvd folder twice to the different settings rather than compressing a video file that's already been compressed I'd have thought.
well i dont do it all the time it was just that i need to play it on a PS3 which support MP4 !!! basically just tried a container shift although its an odd issue i would have thought it should have no problem converting files it previsouly converted.
Ahhhh, gotcha. To be honest, I use my xbox 360 as a media centre extender and it plays x264's in an mp4 fine, so o dunno why media centre itself wouldn't. I'll try when I get home. None of this solves your actual handbrake issue. You tried the latest nightly build, or are you using the latest stable?
Also, are you using a preset you've defined, or are you using the ones built onto handbrake? If you create a custom preset it asks if you want to save the picture settings like crop and stuff with it. That might be the issue.
Hmm, as someone with an extremely basic understanding of this, I'd say its trying to scan a frame of the video that doesn't exist. Have you had a look at the handbrake forums? They're pretty helpful over there. Try doing it again but keep a copy of the activity log and post that as well there. Sorry I can't be any more help.
If you get nowhere, you can always try something like xenonmkv which doesn't transcode: it just repackages the video & audio into an .mp4. Xenonmkv does change the audio to 2 channel aac as that's all the xbox supports with x264, but their might be summat similair for ps3 that's better for you.
The eror occurs on open the file and IF i proceed and convert anyway it forces the aspect ratio into a door shape, the file however still plays.
Try manually setting the output resolution to the same as the source, and give it a preview, see if that works. It is strange though.
I did a bit of googling and quite a few people seem to be having this, or they did in 2009 at least. When converting to mp4 are you using high profile or normal? Edit: Also, is it possible to get a screenshot of your settings before you try to convert to mp4, including source location and output location?
The error occurs before i even do anything. the error i posted above happens as soon as i open my mkv files although i havent tried changing profiles first. I use a custom profile by the way
If all your really wanting to do is change the container, I'd just use gotsent tbh. It'll just demux the audio & video, possibly transcode the audio if it needs to, then remux them as an .mp4. It'll be much quicker than transcoding the whole thing, and you'll keep the quality of your video.
