How typical. Let's make a genuinely useful USB recharging product, then label it as an iPod recharger so everyone will buy it because it's got something to do with Apple. A bit like an iPod headphone splitter...

since usb operates at a standard voltage and current rating i'm guessing a gizmo like this would be useful for recharging any potable usb device? quite groovy :)

can't see much sense in getting a uber-tiny shuffle and carting around a massive charger for it though

    It's home-made, not a commercial product....

now to make one run by gerbils! that would be the best!

gerbils need feeding. you have to pay for their food. you work for money.

    nothing's ever 100% efficient :(

I built a 9V battery charger for my 2G iPod a couple years back, but I ran into some problems with it. One time when I left the battery attached to the contraption, but not plugged into the iPod, the battery started to melt or something...very strange.

I don't think it's such a good idea to trust your pricey gadgets with this kind of thing. Unless there's a decent converter in there, I'm fairly sure the voltage-levels could vary quite a bit, and you _know_ that 8v through a normally 5v chip is just no good.
