    hey,

this kinda follows on from an earlier thread but i thought it was kinda seperate and possibly useful for others.

Whats the best settings for handbrake when encoding a DVD. looking for the best quality but with a file size of less than a 3.5GB or so ideally 3GB or less unless quality is compromised.

im trying some now but if others know whats good and whats not or whats irrlevant would be much appreciated as there are lots of settings in handbrake and not sure what they all do lol.

ive try this first (if a settings is not mentioned its default of normal profile:

    MKV container
    Avg Bitrate: 2500kbps
    2- pass encoding
    Adaptive B-frames: Optimal
    Anamorphic: Loose

    Changed settings

    MKV container
    CRF: 21
    Anamorphic: loose (16)
    adaptive B-frames: Optimal

seems to be better - 2hr film 1GB file size

gunna lower the CRF to 15 to see if it improves quality some more

I was just gonna say, 3gb?? LOL. A normal dvd is around 1gb to 2gb max. I use ripbot 264 for my mkv movies.

CRF: 15 made my file size around 2.5GB for iron man 2

lowered it to CRF: 17 which made it 1.77GB which is acceptable and i couldnt tell the difference between 15 and 17 so no loss really.

might stick with that unless anyone knows any better

CRF: 18. I don't really notice a loss in quality until I go down to about 20, so I just bumped it a couple higher :D

I also go for 4 reference frames and 4 B-frames. Setting 7 for the sub-pixel motion stuff and I tend to do Uneven Multi-Hexagon (UMH). Those are the main settings.

    I get darned good results.

File sizes tend to be around 1.5GB for a 2hr movie is what I would say my average is.
