the good thing is manufacturers are starting to balk at the carriers demands. The middle-man is being an arrogant ass and everybody is tired of it on both sides, manufacturer and consumer. sooo, several brands have started to sell unlocked phones, though this only works for GSM phones, CDMA carriers like Verison or Sprint have you by the balls, sorry. The carriers will start to wake up and smell the garbage soon or go out of business. Other carriers will move in that will sell you a SIM card with fewer strings attached. All you need is to buy the phone once
I'd have to say they've worked out a good system. It's almost monopolistic. Want the iPhone, go with AT&T. While I certainly like the Asian/European system of choosing a phone, then choosing a carrier, North American telecom companies really have a great thing going for them. I really doubt any carrier can go out of business with this current model. And what incentive do they have to offer unlocked phones? AT&T isn't going to be making any money by selling unlocked Nokias for use on Sprint. And don't forget the common customer who just wants to plop down some money and have everything done for them at once. If you want to complain about the iPhone, complain to Apple. AT&T is just the carrier. It's not AT&T who made it exclusive - it's Apple. The device is Apple's. If Apple was really going to get all consumer friendly with the iPhone, they'd have released it unlocked as an off-the-shelf item with directions to purchase a SIM - or at least allow other carriers to bundle it with their plans. I'm sure AT&T is not the only carrier who would love to carry the iPhone, and I'm damn sure Apple's iPhone would be just a big of a success, if not more, if it was available to different networks. In fact, a multi-network, unlocked iPhone would be even more popular. That would be Apple's smartest move (the iPod didn't really take off until everybody (Windows users) could use it too). Why only AT&T then? My only guess would be because Apple receives a nice bonus for being exclusive - and as much of a messiah as fanboys would like to think Apple is - it's still a corporation with shareholders to please.
