Mine are cooled with 80mm's at the moment, but will be cooled by a singe 120 once i've migrated to my new case, after I finish building it.

Ha! I just bought one of these sweet things. It converts three 5.25” bays into four 3.5” HDD bays and adds a 120 mm fan to cool the four drives.

I especially like it because most of my machines aren't even in cases, they are just sitting on tables or a horizontal surface (lol - yes even the floor). Soooo, this handy device provides both cooling and a safe haven for drives that might otherwise just be sitting around.

Also, if you are building a case from scratch, it provides great additional flexability.

Absolutely nothing atm, since its an old IBM 20gb drive, and my case doesnt have a fan spot in front of the hdd bays.

But when i get my Maxtor DM10 (they run very hot), I'll be sticking a chopped up old heatsink to it and adding a 60mm fan.

What bit actually needs cooling? I'm guessing it's the motor bit?

the whole thing. if the motor gets hot, the heat creeps through the entire unit.

My Raptor in my desktop is in its own drive bay with its very own 80 mm fan blowing on it.

My server has a 120mm fan blowing across the 3 - 200 gb WD SEs.....they stay fairly cool.....about 27 degrees

in my main rig i have one hdd in a 5 1/4 bay with mesh on the front of it, the other in 3 1/2 drive cage of its own with the two 3 1/2 drive covers removed and replaced with mesh. the exhausts in my case are powerful enough to pull air in over the hdds ;)

in my server (1800+) i have a 80mm fan blowing over the drive (WD 800BB) as its gets damn hot (50*C) without extra cooling.

the other computer (3000+) hasn't got any hdd cooling but the case is fairly large and the hdd doesn't get very hot anyway. THe exhaust fans pull enough air into the front of the case and presumeably over the hdd anyway, but the suction power is nothing like my vacuum cleaner (2500+) :naughty:

So if i stick a heatsink to the motor to get the heat away from it quicky, and then have a little 60mm fan blowing on the heatsink, would this do?

    for a Maxtor DM10 120gb SATA

I modded a 120mm fan into the front of my case, the hdd sits right behind it, and stays cool
