    hi
I want to buy a new hard drive to go inside my shuttle.
However it gets stupidly hot and at the last LAN, the CPU hit 74oC on full load! Unsurprisingly, I dont want to make it any hotter than it is already with another hot hard drive.
Anyone got some advise you could share about what hard drive to buy that runs cool and is also good for money? I dont want an IBM Deathstar as I dont want to risk it even if they might be "better" now. I have a 60GXP and its a time bomb waiting to die!
I have a Maxtor D740 which is good but nosiy and runs a bit hot in the shuttle.
I guess I want about 80 gigs I suppose too.

    Cheers,
    Catherine :)

5400rpm drives are quieter than 7200rpm. They tend to run cooler as well. However, the CPU, graphics card and PSU all generate far more heat than the HDD. Maybe look at CPU and case cooling before replacing the HDD.

    Cheers

I would get a IBM 180GXP, but since you don't want them get a Maxtor Diamondmax plus 9. I have both and both run great. If you want the quietest get a Seagate Barracuda IV/V, but you will lose a little bit of performance compared to other hard disks.

Thats the thing about the shuttle - i dont actually have a graphics card as i use the onboard one.
I cant do much about the case cooling except ensure the computer is placed in a coolish place and that the parts inside arent thew hottest one available..
    Thanks all for the tips.
I will certainly have a look at the models suggested.

    Cheers,
    Catherine

I'd have to agree with lethal injection about the IBM/Hitachi GXP180s. I have two of them and they perform excellently. Performance wise they are just marginally lagging behind the Western Digital Caviar range but the IBMs are noticibly quieter.

I have an IBM 120gb and a WD 100gb, both housed in "SilentDrive" boxes. The IBM is totally silent, the WD can still be heard (spindle noise). The IBM also runs 8C cooler. The WD is slightly quicker, but it cost more.

    Cheers

Those Shuttle systems can be a real pain heat-wise. I feel your pain.

However, there is a solution to the problem. My sister's ss50 was having problems with overheating, but I figured out that the shuttle website sells the I.C.E. Heatpipe used in their later models as a seprate package. It has improved the heating situation quite a bit, and the system now runs with the single 80mm fan on low, running UD cancer research at 100%.

It is using a maxtor 20gb hard drive, which I have found to actualy be a hot little guy, but with the heatpipe it doesn't matter.

    Hope this helps ;)

Unfortunately, I already use the heatpipe system so that wont make any difference. I have the ss51.

It would appear that the IBM is better heat wise but I still doubt whether or not it still has faults on them and so I feel rather relucant to buy one.
    This is all so tricky!

you shouldn't doubt anything about the IBM's, the 120GXP and 180GXP have a much higher reliability than the equivalent western digital and maxtor drives, only the seagates are more reliable. check out the storagereview.com database.

I am thinking of getting the WD800JB.
    What do people think?

i still dont trust IBM as I know more than 5 people who have had hard drives die within 6 months. It is just too risky as I am too poor to replace it if it does die!

My maxtor seems fine at the moment - fingers crossed!

Good drive, but it is noisy, and runs hot.
Current IBM drives really are as reliable as anything else, do not be afraid to buy one!
The current Samsung drives are also worth considering. They are very quiet.

    Cheers

My alst 120GXP died within 3 weeks, but i RMA'd (free btw - no costs to replace) it and now i'm here with the replacement drive 8 months on, 20 hours a day seven days a week without a problem. :) Technically this drive should be dead by now, but it isn't. They're only supposed to live for one year at 8 hours/day.
Don't worry about them not being reliable, they are - buy one

It was on the IBM specification .pdf, they decided to omit it from the Hitachi/IBM .pdf though...

it was just a recommendation by them, so they can avoid a lawsuit like the one coming to them with the problems of the 75gxp series

    I don't friggin believe it!!! :(
The GXP180 that IBM just sent me has died! All I heard was three clicks and bam, it drops out of My Computer! I'm totally gutted, I've only had this drive 4 days :(

It said 20454 expected hours of life for the whole drive, nothing more, nothing less

Probably was just to cover up, but it still had a year's warranty with it, so if it does die - i'll RMA it and get another.

"Yes... of course it was used for 3 hours a week... of course..."

As a student, I cant be doing without my computer.
I already have a IBM 60GXP in a computer that will be soon a router and I wont be popular in the house when the net access goes because of a hard drive failure!
I just dont trust the GXP range one bit. Its too much money to risk as well.
I read off the http://www.storagereview.com that the WD800JD is about 5-6 degrees cooler than the Maxtor D740x and 2 dB quieter.
    Hmm. interesting.

I suggest you pick up the 80Gig JB since it is one of the fastest drives out there, decent noise factor, and usually you can get it for a decent price. Plus, it still has the extended warranty unlike all the other drives.
