Hope it's not a repost: http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~umparekh/hard_drive_clock.html Pictures and videos. An old hard drive is opened up and slots on the platters and LEDs are used to create clock hands.
im pritty certian im going to make one, got a basic stamp board thats not doing much atm so i should be able to control it with that. all i would need to make is the IR sensor input and the LED output. got 2 hdds that i was going to throw away. e-mailed him to ask if i can have the code in english rather then HEX. cos im not 100% certain how the clock works. i think it calculates the speed of the platers based on the time interval between IR detection then when the plater is in the correct position, based on a time interval it turns on the LED colour / colours for that hand. hopefully my one will be able to have 3 LED outputs as well so hopefully i can have RGB hands.
the best thing to use as the sensor would be an old mouse they have a U shaped usint that is an IR Emitter & Sensor built in one, very useful and easy to wire up
