Just getting everything i need together for buildin a suitcase PC (yeah i know not very original, but will suit what i need it for perfectly) Just trying to figure out a way of mounting the HDD in such a way that the odd knock or bang wont do any damage. Anyone any ideas or guides as to how this could be done ??
Make a box and fill it with foam or somthing then put the hdd in it best as i can come up with after all the suga i've had.
On a serias note i don't think a few noks will harm it that much i've nocked my comp over loads of times its fel over in the car and been fine. If youw ant to do something then you can mount it in like a cage kinda thing Have a frame bigger then the HDD then mount the HDD inside the frame suspended on some elastic that way it will take the shock, make sure the elastic is tight so it dont nock into the frame or bounce around for ages. Hows that just slapped myself to get sorted Damn no slap bang head instead then
Surely that won't be very good for the temperatures? Suspending it from small springs on each corner? *n [np: Run DMC - It's Like That (Original version)]
Temps would be fine i rapped a hdd in foam to keep the noise down, it was in my file server foam was about 3" thikc quite as a mouse after that. It didn't die and works to this day i think.
Thanks for the ideas. got some foam so i will try wrapping it in that and see how it goes ( will keep an eye on temps tho ) I think i may start a project log
Without cooling in open air, my hard drives get really quite hot to the touch. I don't think wrapping them is a good idea unless you watercool them, which isn't very viable. The springs idea sounds good though.
id have to say it was a **** hdd like 5,400 and very small try doing the elastic thing thats better. My mate Eaterofpies is good at this sort of thing he has made a case don't think he used any ingenius method of mounting the hud think he just plonked it in there
Thats what i thought anbout the temps. just looking into the springs idea at the min. will need 8 springs and a cage to mount it all in. Now just to find the springs. elastic sounds even easier !!!!!!!!!!
not to good on the springs thing but a cage could be made from and old cd rom case how about that just cut some big square holes in it top and bottom for ventilation depending on the speed of your hdd as i said my hdd was old and slow
I've just hadd an idea for the cage. Get some plexi make too rectangle pieces same size for top and bottom of cage then use some perspex tubing to attach them then use some crome springs then it would look well cool, perhaps light it with some LEDs cool just thought of something i can do although have a go if you like.
Initially its gonna have a 6.4 gig fujitsu (junk) but will have a 60gig 5400 Maxtor in there when finished. was thinkin of rippin a 5.25" mounting section out of an old case and mount the CDRom and Hard drive in that ( keeps it all fairly simple ) this is my first real mod, unless you count spraying a case were the paint peeled off a week l8r or blowing up a cdrom after changing the LED
Ok i've not done to many mods i got loads of idea im just too lazzy to do them . and the blowing up thing if a day goes by where i don't electricute my self on something then its a miricle
Same here over loadsa ideas Just not got the time/knowledge for half of em so i've decided to start off with a real useful one that i've been toying with for a year or so.
Yeah I thought they where pretty neat too. I was surprised that they did reduce noise (although not by a HUGE amount, they definately did reduce it!)....and should be idea if they fit IMO...
Enlarging the harddrive mounting holes, then putting in rubber gormets works very well for sound isolation also. But for shock protection, I would use either use springs, or rubber. But I would also install a small fan to cool the harddrive. COOL THE BOTTOM, the top is just a lid. Top cooling is a bad practice I see on ALL watercooled harddrives.
It's all metal, it conducts heat. Should I move the fan from my radiator on my car to the exhaust manifold because the radiator doesn't produce heat?
Of course it is all metal, but the top lid is seperated from the bottom metal via a rubber lining (Hence the dust tape around the drives) What really needs to be cooled is the Chips and Motor controller. These are typicaly connected to the main metal body. The best place to cool these is at the sides (As the PCB normaly gets in the way on the bottom) (refer to this image) http://www.zapwizard.com/Laptopwindow/Harddrive_naked.JPG (Yes, it is a laptop drive, but the design is similar) But if only using a fan, you can directly cool the PCB and since the controller chips often use the ground wires as heatsinks, air cooling the PCB can also provide cooling for the chips attached to it. (refer to the chip of the left in this image) http://www.zapwizard.com/real_hd_indicator/ICs.JPG -------------------------- Of course a radiator does not produce heat, but it does cools the car. The lid of a harddrive does not produce heat, but again it does not cool the harddrive, so cooling the lid does very little. (Except mabye make condensation on the inside of the harddrive) but...Back to topic!
