Hi all i have a question:
How can i hook up 2 hard drives on the same IDE cable BUT only have one start up when i turn on the power? (leaving the other hard drive off)

I want to use a switch (SPDT) to do this with. But since all the SPDT switches at Radioshack dont have any LEDs on them i would like to set it up so that i can have an LED on as well when i select a hard drive (2 leds; 1 for each hard drive that is on)

So if u could, please tell me in words or a drawing of how i can hook this all up :D

    Thanks for your time,
    David

I'm not sure, I've been thinking about this myself. I'm thinking a dpdt switch to turn the 5&12V between each drive. An led could be connected to 5V on the drive side of the switch.

If anyone has a better idea then post it.

This will b in an xbox... I was just looking for a switch to connect the two hard drives together and then just switch the power to one of them with the switch.

    Any more ideas?

Why would you want to do that anyway?

I'll guess he wants to install Linux on one, and just use the other one normally... :naughty:

Most people just leave them both on. But then again, this is a modding forum.

I would go with the DPDT switch, but make sure the xbox is fully off (like unplugged) before you switch it.

You could possibly make a cover for the switch so that when the cover is opened it cuts off the xbox, and restores it when closed.

It would propably be easier to use relays to switch the xbox instead of an actual switch though, You would have to get a small 12v transformer, and put it in before the relays so that when you lift the door the switch sends power to the dpst relay (2 switches normaly closed) so that the relay cut power to the xbox, switch the HDD, and close the door to gend power back to the xbox PSU.

I can make a schematic if you need clarification.

hum ConKbot of Doom... maybe that would be a good idea to draw it out for me....

lets see if i can make it a little clearer......

ok, its an XBOX... u can only have one hard drive operating at one time. So getting a trio or whatever will not work out cuz there is a DVD rom that is hooked up to the chain as well. Plus it cost a lot more than just getting a switch to pretty much do the same thing...

Now for the LED to come on when u swich it from one or the other. That would be a great little feature if i could have this... Make it look like a push button and everytime u push it, a led lights up (back and forth movement) to tell u what hard drive is seleted....

The hard drive just needs to have power.. it will be set on "cable select" since there is a DVD rom drive on it as well. Now only thing i need to do is stop power to one HD and GIVE power to the other HD and vis versa when i want to turn the other one on.

I hope thats a better view for u all to understand..

    Thanks for your time,
    David

Because my second hard drive is a noisy old 540meg beast so I don't want it funning all the time. It does have a window in the top so I want to be able to watch it going sometimes.
