    Hi everyone ...

Posting from my dads PC, couldn`t resist any longer ... neeed bit ... anyway :

I`m building up a little system for older games and I`m constantly getting an error after installing Windows2000.
    This is the setup :

    Elitegroup Mobo
    IBM Hardrive 40 GB
    Asus GF2 MX
    2x128MB SD-Ram
    32x Sony CD-Rom
100/10 Ethernet card with SIS chipset

After installing Win2K I get the error "non accessable boot device" when rebooting. I first had an A7V installed and thought it could be that, but then I instaled the brand new elitegroup mobo and the error still occured. I cheked the harddrive with the IBM diagnostics tools and they said the drive was o.k. ... Any ideas what could be causeing the problem ?

    Cheers

You managed to install win2K to the HDD, but it won't boot? Check that the HDD is set in boot options in cmos.

Did you set the win 2k partition as the active partition in Fdisk?

The disk has been formatted and all partitions were deleted and then remade with each install of win2k. And there is only one HD in the system so it`s automatically the boot drive. I`m baffled here as everything seems to be o.k. but isn`t ... hhmmmm ... :grr:

    Cheers

Try Booting from a DOS or Win 95 floppy, then fdisk and format /s. Then try booting from the HDD. That will rule out all OS and driver problems.
If it still will not boot, boot from the floppy and check you can read the HDD from DOS.

Also check that the HDD is jumpered as master, and that it is definately set in boot options. Although you only have one HDD, it still needs to be defined in cmos as a boot device.

    Cheers

Hmmm ... it seemed to be some sort of issue only Win2k had. I booted with a DOS boot disk and I was able to access and read the HDD without any problems. Today I wiped the HDD again and installed WinXP and had no problems at all. So I guess I`ll stay with WinXP on that machine ... :blah:

Thanks for all your suggestions !

    Cheers

try booting up with the win2000 setup disks, go into recovery mode, and try running FDISK /MBR to rewrite the master boot record. I believe FIXMBR is a command in the recovery console too..
