Hello bit-tech I'm in need of some aid in diagnosing which part has failed on me, although I'm quite sure it is my CPU I'd like to know for sure before buying a replacement. I have snapped a few photos since i can't take screen caps :duh: so excuse the quality and the dirty monitor :p.

Oh, also a little bit of info for hindsight I received an error msg for a failed overclock and considering my CPU was the only thing overclocked I'm quite sure it's the problem.

    Anyways here are the pictures...

Here is the initial boot where it gives me the options for safe mode etc. as you can see many of the characters are distorted.

Here is the XP loading screen where you can see green dotted lines covering the screen.

Finally this is XP fully booted and you can't see anything but a black bg and those pesky green dotted lines :wallbash:

Any insight would be much appreciated

    Thanks in advance

Can you post your full system specs?
Does your motherboard have onboard video or do you have another video card you can try?
With the artifacting I would suspect the video card.
How high was the overclock on the cpu?
Can you remember what other settings were set in the bios? for example was the pci bus locked at 100mhz, was the ram set, what voltage for northbridge, south, just to name a few.
Try removing everything you can, ie a stick of ram, to a minimum system and see what happens.

    specs are

    ASUS P5K
    E6600 C2D
    eVGA 8800GTX
    2gb OCZ platinum rev2

I left the voltage on the cpu as it was and only upped the FSB to reach 3.0ghz. As for the ram It was set to 2.0v.

Looks like it could be your graphics card.
Can you try another, or try this one in another PC?

How long have you had it - check the heatsink's not full of dust.

I have a p5k and a q6600 at 3.0ghz. did you ever check the temps on the cpu? just wondering if as baders said, was the heatsink full of dust? same question for the video card. check and see if its full of dust. maybe a fan failure as well.
taking a e6600 to 3.0 with no voltage increase should not kill the cpu.

I have a dead graphics card in my garage that I bought as 'untested' off ebay - it does exactly the same thing. To me this looks a dead cert graphics failure.

Do you have or can you borrow an alternative to test with? Maybe an independent PC retail outlet will loan you one if you agree to buy a replacement from there later - maybe worth a try!

chrisb2e9 is right, raising the FSB without locking the PCI bus to 100MHz can unintentionally overclock the video card.. Same for RAM, set to a low ratio before raising the FSB.
