    Vista? Noooooooooooooooooo!

    Three reasons:
1 - let everyone else have all the headaches; it won't be fully sorted till at least SP1(b...)
2 - lots of things have been changed in the user interface for no apparent reason. I guess they're trying to give the illusion of progress. But maybe you like having to relearn everything...?
3 - Are you sure that every piece of software that you use (every little add-on, quirky gismo, firefox add-in etc. etc.) will still be supported?

Go for XP Pro; massive support base, well sorted, well supported. And let someone else do Microshaft's development.

Bbq of Doom, I'm going with your recommendations.

Fair enough, looks like a pretty even split, so you pays you money and takes your choice.

Perhaps I prefer the older OS because I've never had all new equipment. Even when I've had a new PC, I've always had an old Palm or Psion or something antiquated that I want to connect up. Even now I've still got a win 95 box handy because it's the only thing that will talk to my cycle computer.

Good luck with your build - looks like it's going to be a real flyer.
