"When we marched, we chanted 'trained to kill and kill we will'," Hinzman told the board Monday. "I remember becoming hoarse from shouting this ... it really hit me. I learned I have a big inhibition about taking human life."

    LOL he's an f'ing paratrooper!!!!!

No-one except psychopaths WANT to take human lives, and the fact is that he's a soldier. Soldiers need to follow orders at all times otherwise the entire military structure falls down when the going gets tough:

"I want you to storm that building that has been used by snipers to kill our troops."

"Screw that, I don't wanna get killed or kill anyone."

    :wallbash:

Another quote - "I signed up to defend the country from all enemies, foreign and domestic -- not to carry out acts of aggression," Hinzman was quoted as saying earlier this year.

The last time America was invaded was when under British rule. Being the worlds greatest superpower kinda deteurs invading countries :D

That essentially kicked off the Revolutionary War. Essentially the War of 1812 was Briton's attempt at re-taking "the Colonies" and America attempt at anexing Canada from Briton. It ended in a stalemate.. If America won, Canada would be part of the USA, if Briton won, the US would be a colony of Briton again...

That's where we hated your tea taxes and threw it in the water to protest.

At least I think so, I suck at history.

That's exactly what it was all about. The "protestors" dressed themselves as Native Americans (Indians), snuck onto the cargo ships at night and dumped all the tea leaves into the Boston Harbor in protest over the high tax on tea.

    Oh my...

That's one thing I don't understand. If we don't remember our history we're doomed to repeat it.

But enough of that train of thought...

Deserting is not the right thing to do, even if you are really feeling that way. There are other ways to get out of the service that don't involve getting in trouble (such as asking to be transfered off of active duity or transfered to a different non-combat unit).

If you didn't know what you were getting into when you signed up, you darn well should have not signed up. You have sworn service to your commander and chief and until that duity has been lifted of you and you have served for as long as you agreed, you are still oblegated to do what the people above you say you are to do. Doesn't matter what you think.

I mean he was accused once, then they let him go while they were trying to clear it up, then he did it again? I would have thought that he would have extra vigilant to be back on time to show that he wasn't a complete flake.

The problem with your theory here is that many people do not know what they are getting themselves into because they are deliberately misled. Many people are coaxed into joining the military with promises of job opportunites and free college tuition. They tell you that war is not like it used to be, that we fight technological wars now with few troops on the ground in harm's way. (This is what a Marine recruiter told me.) This is all bs of course and becomes clear when you find yourself on the ground, stuck on the sinking ship that has become the Iraq war. I'm not saying that all troops were lied to and that's why they are there. I'm just saying that there are some very dishonest recruiting tactics out there to make the military seem more friendly and appealing than the reality of the situation.

The fact is that he has a responsability to follow orders and go into battle whether or not he believes in it or not. If he doesn't want to then he's in the wrong game and should go into something non-'gun and bomb' related.

The worst bit is this is the second time! You would have though he got the idea the first time... :sigh:

True, but the first thing you do as a Marine is go to Parris Island here in South Carolina for boot camp. Anyone who passes through the very first element of training would have no mistakes as to thier roll in the military.

My little brother is a Marine now. He is in the process of becoming what he always wanted to be, an aviator. But he had to go through basic training in Parris Island in August which is probably the most miserable place on earth that time of year learning how to operate and take life. Then he went to cold weather training in Quantanamo learning how to take life in the cold. Then he was a supply clerk and now he's in OCS, a full year after joining, he is just now getting to work on what he went in for. I could see joining maybe the Air Force and never thinking you would end up on the ground with a gun in your hand but not the army and especially the marines.

He should realize is mistake and take a dishonorable discharge and get on with his life and STFU

Is this the one who said he wouldn't kill his Muslim brothers? Give him a dishonourable discharge and you'll find him on the other side in 3 weeks time with an AK in his hand.....

    .....Maybe.

    1. After signing the papers at the recruiters, you usualy have a few days to think things over. And if you don't show up to go to basic, the usualy don't follow up. So even if you buy the cock and bull story, you have a chance to think it over and bail.

    2. Never belive what a recruiter tells you. Never. When my father was a drill instructor, he hated recruiters for filling kids heads with crap, crap that my father then had to beat out of them.
