hi all this is my first post here!...........im getting a 3800 x2 and a geforce 7800gt with a asus a8n sli premium and this crucial memory http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/prod...2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X3Jldmlld3M=&product_uid=92005 .....i wanted to try and overclock the x2 3800 to 2.4ghz....will it be possible with this memory!!!! plus i have a zalman cnps7000b-cu to slap on the cpu to cool it!!!....
First of all it isn't garanteed that the chip will be capable of that. Secondly, as the page wont load I don't know what memory it is but if it is value stuff you can always run a divider to keep the memory at stock (or near enough) frequencies. Thirdly, this time assuming it's a 2GB Ballistix set, then you may be in some trouble as some sticks do have problems. Crucial customer support is highly rated though so should be no problem getting an RMA, just hassle!
Well, it's crucial and they are a good brand. You will probably have very limited overclockability (if any) compared to other RAM sticks. But as eek said, if you run the RAM at a divider you can keep the RAM at stock speeds whilst overclocking the cpu, which should do 2.4GHz well, especially with that fab cooler (the same as mine ).
Seemingly most X2 3800+ only get into trouble around 2.6 or 2.7, so 2.4 shouldn't be a problem for the core unless you get extremely unlucky, you do want to make sure you have adequate cooling though. The ram listed is standard DDR400 Cas 3 stuff. If you haven't ordered yet you can get DDR500 Cas 3 from corsair for about £150 by the way. As eek mentioned already you will be able to run memory dividers, most likely you would want a 5:4 (FSB:RAM) divider, that would mean the memory was running 200 (DDR400) when the FSB was at 250, or 192 (DDR384) with the FSB at 240. Its possible that the ram will be capable of overclocking above its rated numbers as well, though you won't know by how much till you have it. Highland3rs basic overclocking guide on the coolercases forum is an excellent read if you are new to it
thanks for your replys guys!.....i didnt realise till just after i ordered i could have got better ram for only about 40 pound more! silly me! ...im new to overclocking so i didnt know what was best and all the jargon can be a little confusing at first! so i will be doing a lot of reading up on the subject to try and get me upto speed and if worst comes to the worst il save and get the better ram and flog this stuff to my friend!
