And that's where I just don't get it. What's emotional about buying a Mac? They're all the same... they're just white goods. You may as well have an emotional experience buying a fridge. Every other Mac user has exactly the same machine as you do, and having the exact same experience. Isn't that what I said? Much less than half their profits from computers. LOL You almost sound as if you are envious of me for not liking Apple. That's just weird.
Nope.. because all Macs are the same, all cars aren't. But with cars (and PCs), some are more exclusive than others for a variety of reasons. Some are rarer than others, some faster than others, some you even build yourself To use an analogy, if there were only Macs and no other computers, it would be like all other car manufacturers ceasing to exist, and all you could buy was, for agument's sake, Ford. You have a choice of models, but that's it.. just Ford. You could have them in the spec Ford decide, and they would not allow you to modify or customise them in any way. That.. would take all the soul out of motoring: Knowing your car was exactly like everyone else's and there was nothing you could do about it even if you wanted to.
So every Mac is identical? Most people don't really mind if their car is very similar to the other cars on the road.
No they don't, and those people generally don't really enthuse about their cars either. Every Mac is pretty much identical yes. If I buy a 27" iMac, it will be exactly like everyone else's 27" iMac.
I hate it. I suck with it. I cannot navigate with the wheel for my life. My iriver h320 makes an ipod look like a piece of crap. I cannot stand MTP protocol. I don't want to have to use first or third party software to get music on my player. They don't support flac. Also Itunes sounds like crap.
No. You said that their profits are "not from their COMPUTERS at all", which is in no way shape or form saying that it's 30% of their revenue base, and the second biggest part of their business after iPhones. Sorry, you can't wiggle out of that one.
Some people buy a car because they want it to be reliable, easy to drive and get them from A to B. That's it. That's all. They do not see it as a means to express their individuality. They don't care what's under the hood. They will pay a premium for being able to take it to the car dealer's garage once a year so mechanics can do their servicing voodoo and they can drive it, reliably and easily, from A to B for another year. That's the people who buy an iMac. Don't get me wrong: a modern Dell with Windows 7 is almost as easy to use, but it took Windows 7 to get there. OSX has been around since just before Windows XP. There are too many confusing options, too much nagging, too many software updates. Some days you just can't get any work done.
I've got a 17" 2011 mac book pro for work that i dual boot with win 7. The thing itself is beautiful and the build quality is amazing. The design itself is not though. I cut myself twice on the body of the first one, sent it back and the second one, is still sharp, but would actually require pressure to cut, I've since filed this edge, and its now non dangerous but extremely uncomfortable when used on a table unless you hover you arms in the air while using it. The second issue i have is battery life, I've never gotten Apples quoted time out of it even when just browsing the web, the issue i have is that i use it for 3d design. This hammers all 4 cores and the GFX card pretty hard, and i can run the battery out from full in just over an hour. This is more of a generic powerful laptop type problem really, to actually sue the power you have, your tethered to a power socket, which for all intensive purposes makes them useless. Now if i could take a spare battery with me, this problem would be mitigated somewhat, but you cant do that on any apple product these days The other issue is heat, the cooling on the mac book pro is massively inadequate, again its fine if you just use it as a £2300 facebook/youtube machine, but in any kind of real usage it gets really hot, this not only means that you can't use it on your lap, but the heat itself causes the processor to slug and the battery to run out even quicker, and I hope they solve it on the next gen Mac book pro's. Also, Lion sucks, it appears to be the ME of OSX releases, I've had more crashes that required a reboot with that than i have on all my win7/win xp machines in the last 5 years. My last point is unless it's for a specific piece of software that's OSX only, the vast majority of people buy Apple products as a fashion statement, anyone that tells you they're more reliable (which is a downright lie) or easier to use or better is just using it as a cover as they don't want to be seen as vain and materialistic....
But they are easier to use for lots of people, if you factor in the in store classes and help with getting it all setup then it can make it much easier for people that aren't up to speed with technology. Oh and materialistic? That is the society we live in so you can't blame people for wanting to project a certain image of themselves through the products they own.
If you cut yourself on it, its not got good build quality. It's difficult to even make a laptop sharp to be honest.
