I'm having the exact same dilemma. My girlfriend has never seen them before (and she is keen to!). I'm thinking 4,5,6 and then...... (none of the others) Now, the next problem is which edition? Blu Ray with all the new edits or DVD with the old versions.
Personally, ANYTHING but the blu-ray but preferably old versions. Jabba almost always freaks ladies out first time they see him, do you want that magic ruined by some crappy CGI scene added to 4?
I like them all. I watched The Phantom Menace first (then I think I watch 4,5,6 since I loved it) To this day I prefer 1,2,3 and I think that's because 4,5,6 felt lacking in one of the best bits (for me) which was the lightsaber duels. People need to stop moaning about the prequels And in answer to your question, I'd go for 4,5,6,1,2,3 purely because as it has been said. The prequels would take away from the story of the older films.
Lol, very true! That, and that awesome scene where all the Star Destroyers take off, that was pretty awesome. Me too, I couldn't believe how much different his character felt from that one, tiny, change. That's a no-brainer Parge. The remastered but not CGI'd editions on DVD (before Mos Eisley got spunked on by ILM and before Greedo shot first).
I have them on Blu Ray and other than a few small irritating features and alterations they are fine. I totally agree he should leave the films alone instead of constantly tweaking them but there seems to be a lot of hate aimed at the new versions. I guess die hard fans will be die hard fans. I agree at the end of RotJ having Darth Vader yell "NOOOOOOOO!" in a particular scene I shall not mention for fear of ruining it for others is (although those who have seen it can guess I'm sure) is totally not required it didn't ruin the film. There are other more significant offences but again none of them truly game changers for me. I like Star Wars a lot but I'm no die hard fan. The whole "han shot first" thing I never understood. It didn't affect my overall opinion of Hans character at all. I do however agree 4,5,6,1,2,3,4,5,6 is the way to do it.
I will admit I am a little bit over zealous, it's just the first appearance of Obi Wan which drove me mad. That and changing Anakin's ghost to the new kid, that doesn't make sense for me. Han and Greedo? Meh. They shot together but Greedo was a crap shot. You are right about too much hate on the prequels but to me, as well as others i suppose, they're not just movies. I never got to see them at the cinema as a kid since I was born on the day of ESB's release (**** yeah ) but I distinctly remember ESB being on BBC1 on christmas day in, I think, 1985 and the living room was absolutely full of family and neighbours as we had the biggest TV (Radio Rentals, naturally). That memory is one of my best ever xmas memories so it holds a bit more for me.
I would consider myself a big fan of Star Wars, although in a different way from most (I'm only 20) so I don't have any nostalgia or anything... Hence why I've also never really got the Han shot first thing :/ Changing the ghost has very little affect I think, merely tries to link the trilogies together a little more. Also what's with all the hate of GL?
They made another 3?! I remember my Uncle bringing round the original VHS release. I sat down (age 5) and watched all 3 there and then. I then went on to collect Star Wars figures. I managed to get every figure from between 1995-2001. I even had the Millennium Falcon. My God I love Star Wars.. Well, I got sidetracked there a bit.. Show them 4, 5, 6. Then if you really must show them more, 1.. and leave it at that. Hayden Christensen ruined the films for me.
Personally it's 4,5,6 then burn 1 in a pit of burning defecation then play frisbee with 2 and 3, whatever survived, watch. The world is a better place.
+1 for 4,5,6 and wait until they are old enough to deal with the emotional disappointment and distress that 1,2,3 has caused so many generations
^This, to be honest. My 4-year-old daughter has seen 4, 5, and 6, and she absolutely loves Darth Vader. We showed her Episode 1 thinking that she might like the pod races and may even laugh at Jar Jar Binks. After a few minutes she sighed, turned to us and asked, "Where's Darth Vader?" Rather than explain the whole back story, we just said that he wasn't in this one. She lost interest immediately and went on to something else. Side story: My sister got her one of the Lego Friends sets, and my daughter took the hair off the minifig and put Darth Vader's helmet on instead. Yeah, she's that cool.
^^ That is awesome. I've just mentioned Star Wars - the 18 y/o girl in the office watched the opening 2 minutes of Ep. 4 and said "That's just a war film, my grandad watches those. I hate it."
i think she watched Galaxy Wars the historical documentary. 4 5 6 1 2 3 is the order i'd use to introduce people into Star Wars universe. as said, 1 2 3 has to be watched with ending in mind. knowing whole of star wars history, rewatching the series on DVD in numerical order still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. somehow, 4 5 6 1 2 3 felt natural.
How could she just dismiss Star Wars Episode 4 like that?? We need a plan to educate these people. It will involve plenty of duct tape, a 55" tv and a dvd player as well as some whipped cream... no sorry that last item is for when she thanks us for educating her.
25 and still haven't seen any of them. Seen the Family Guy ones so there isn't much point watch the original ones.
Good god, it has to be 4,5,6 then 1,2, and 3. Yes 1,2, and 3 are disappointing, but still fill in some of the blanks.
It really doesn't dude, all it does is remove every single twist and surprise. There's a reason to watch them in the 4,5,6,1,2,3 order and this is it.....
