So 7870 is probably going to perform better than 6970. I wonder how much and how the 7950/70 will compare.
I thought the 7970 would be the successor in terms of placement in the lineup. I wasn't thinking that the 7870 was a direct replacement, much like a 5770 isn't a direct replacement for a 4850/70. They perform similar but the replacement was the 5870. I hope that makes sense
All i want from AMD sources right now is a damn release date! Do i upgrade to a 6950 now or wait a few months? If i knew it was going to be out this year i would wait and get the 7xxx, if they say Spring 2012 for higher end cards i will just buy a 6950 tomorrow.
You're probably right, but the numbering scheme is absolute tosh - ATI were fine with flagship cards the 3870 and 4870 and their X2 counterparts... they went a little off balance with the 5870 and the 5970, and then completely off the rails by releasing a 6870 which is inferior to the 5870 (lol). If the new lineup follows the same performance trend, then we should expect the 7870 to be equal to the 6950 lol
Maybe the 7870 is mid range, like the 6870 but will outperform it. Then 7970 will better than the 6970, but not enough to warrant an upgrade and then the 701090 will outperform everything currently known
Looks like power consumption is going to quite a lot better again, hopefully performing better than the card it's replacing whilst consuming less power also. Christmas and my birthday in February... well timed I feel!
I'll "upgrade" to what ever card is equal if the prices are good, and sell my 6870, then I can fit it all in a sg-03 cooly
i think these are midrange cards though. and xdr2 is rambus memory for graphics cards . looks like ati is going to be using rambus memory on the 7900 serieslook at the power draw
5.8GHz memory, wat. My poor old 4870 only runs at 4GHz Power consumption figures are hella impressive.
