Since I have yet to stay in a hotel with an HDTV (much less one to connect my console to), I'm looking for a way to use my laptop as an approximation.
What are my options for 720p?
I have seen some units that take component, but quite a few are limited to 480i (they can't even do 480p!)

So, I'm turing to where I normally do when I am confused :)

Any reccomendations on a USB or 4 pin firewire box that can get video from wither component or HDMI and display it with very low latency on my PC?

Is this still an area no one knows about?

its uncommon to get a laptop that supports video in, there usually all video outputs with the main idea of hooking up to projectors.

So in short unless your laptop can surport video in, your faced with looking for an external TV tuner which has a component video in socket, which would be used for connecting video players and camcorders to convert old footage.

However component isn't a worth while consideration because last i heard it wasn't HD compatible.

Think you need to google 'Ben Heck'

I was looking for an external box to do the conversion. Even something that can do 720p to ATSC so I can use a video in device that only supports RF would work.

While a Ben Heck portable would be nice, I don't have teh stuff to fabricate those projects and I don't travel enough to justify the cost of a total system built by him.

Not considered just taking a 19" monitor everywhere with you? That's what my cousin does with his 360, connects it via HDMI.

I'm considering that now that I've had a look at some prices. But I'm not sure I have the space to make sure the monitor would a) get there intact (as a carry on) or b) get there at all (checked luggage).

I will go home in two days, get to be home for a week, then head back out. It looks like I can grab the Hauppage at a local computer store so I cna try it, and return it if it does not work well. I can worry about a monitor after that.

ooooooooooh I see you fly, well then in that case you should probably abandon taking a console and laptop with you, I'd never trust them with a console but you could keep the laptop as hand luggage making it safer =\

It must be quire a sight when I travel. I have a 17" Dell 9400, a Fujitsu U810, assorted cables, at least one external HD, and other odds and ends stuffed into my laptop bag until it gets heavy (I have the advantage of being 6'4" and built like an NFL lineman, so it gets pretty heavy).

When I have traveled with my 360, I've packed it into my roll aboard suitcase and that usually covers things. I don't put anything valuable in my checked bag, it's too much of a risk.
Flying really is the only viable option. My company is located on one coast of the US while most of our clents are on the other coast.

The last option I have if the box doesn't work out, and I can't travel with amonitor is to see if I can rent something without it costing more than it's worth.

My local Fry's had the Hauppage units in stock so I bought one. But it seems to lag really, really bad (almost 2 seconds). It comes with some Arksoft capture software, is there some other software I can try to pin it down to hardware or software?

I found some information about using graphedit to set up the rendering graph for the box here. I created the preview graph but it still lags. I'm still going through the arcsoft demux, and arcsoft video decoder filters (tested without audio). I would like to see if I can somehow cut mthose out of the loop.
Does anyone know of a filter that might be able to take the h.264 pin, demux it and let me send it to ffdshow's filters or otherwise get it to video?
