    i have a Western Digital Scorpio Black 250gb 16mb 7200rpm.

what would happen if i flashed it with the firmware of a Scorpio Blue 250gb 8mb 5400rpm?
would i lose the benefit of the larger cache and faster spindle speed?

    thanks.

Why on earth would you want to change the firmware to that of a different drive?

You'd brick the drive. I'm fairly confident that the spindle's roatational speed isn't firmware controlled, rather it's electrically so. Meaning that the drive would be attemting to track and read data 1,800RPM slower than it was happening.

In addition, the firmware is probably very specific in it's method of addressing the onboard memory. What you might end up with is what would happen if you attempted to solder the chip from one USB key to another. It may work, and it may just seem like garbage.

i am not too worried about the rpm difference.
    my thing is...
will the 8mb hdd firmware be able to use all of the 16mb or only 8mb?

    thanks.

I'd assume only 8MB (that's assuming it even worked, or you were able to flash it).

Out of interest, what is your purpose in the flash?

i was assuming 8mb also. hence why i asked the question.

was looking to upgrade my xbox 360 hard drive. no hence it spending the additional money on 7200rpm 16mb if the 5400rpm 8mb firmware can not utilize it.

    thanks.

lxry, buy a drive that's known to work with the 360 rather than bricking another one.

I believe for microsoft not to detect you as using an unofficial hard drive you MUST have the same HDD that is used in the licensed model, I have no idea what the model of the 250GB drive is though so I can't help there. But even then you aren't guaranteed that they won't catch you out.

the hdd i used is supported. was just wondering whether the system would be able to use th 7200rpm and 16mb with the xbox 360 5400rpm 8mb firmware.

i havent bricked the drive. i successfully flashed firmware. works fine with the xbox 360. havent tried using live yet though.
a bit worried about getting banned.
once i fix my second xbox 360, i will try it out. that way, if it does get banned, i have another box to use with live.

    thanks.
