I am thinking of doing the HDD led mod described in the articles section... I am thinking i will do it with a couple of "Lazer" leds. Is there any reason why I wouldnt be able to simplify my mod and just use a couple of relays from the HD LED to the molex connectors on the two Lazer leds?

    thanks

Excuse my electronic ignorance but if you mean "relay" as in just extending the wiring it won't work because the volatge coming from the hdd led is only 2V where as each lazer led setup is designed to run off of 12V. I am thinking of trying a similar mod but am going to do exactly as the artice up to the actual led setup. Project box down to the hdd access pins are going to be the same though.

I think he means a relay fed by the 2v to make and break higher voltage going to the lazer leds. If thats what he meant, it should work.

I wouldn't use relays my friend. They give an audible "click" sound when they switch due to there being an actual physical movement.

Opto-isolators are used in the original for this reason, because they act as a form of relay. You just need to get one with a high enough rating to take the Lazer LEDs.

You can get solid-state relays, but I'd agree with using optoisolators - they seem to be the hip new thing all you crazy electronics kids are using ;--)
