I've been running vista on my new rig for about 4 months now, and my 320gb seagate is starting to run low on space, with about 75gb left. I don't know whats going on, but every time I turn on my computer more space disappears. Like, Windows Explorer will report 500mb-2gb less free space each time I turn it on. Its getting to the point where I'm getting antsy about running out of HDD space.

I suspect Vista is up to no good. Could System Restore be taking all my space? Windows Disk Cleanup only found about 3.77gb of stuff to remove.

My other theory is that Vista is misinterpreting the free space on my drive and keeps screwing up the estimate each time I boot, so it appears different. It always goes down though.

    Anyone else have this problem?

Download a copy of spacemonger, it'll show you where it's all hiding ;)

Yes. Yes it is, and no matter how many times I tell Microsoft, they will not listen. System Restore under Vista is better than the XP version, I'll give them that, but it's slower and HDD hungry. However, it has one fatal floor (for me, anyway); old restore points are not removed!

    Bull.

Open System Properties and go to the "System Protection" tab. uncheck the ticky box next to your drive. Click turn it off. Click on OK. Then reopen System Properties and go to the "System Protection" tab again. Tick the box and click OK.

    Now check your HDD space.

    Thanks for 28 gigs!

I'll keep digging through Spacemonger, see what else I can find that can be incinerated in the recycling bin fires.

Also do a scan for viruses - Old-fashioned worms have a tendency to gobble space, though in this day and age, Vista is a more likely culprit.
