hey all was glancing through anandtechs new story on computex, and they've got a picture up on this website, its the 4th from the bottom http://www.anandtech.com/tradeshows/showdoc.aspx?i=2770 and is it just me, or is that HDMI connector really inadequate?! it seems really small, and theres enough strain thats put on the VGA connectors, all it'l take is a slight tug on the cable and you've got a broken hdmi cable and potentially a unusable hdmi port on your graphics card! what do people reckon?
How many people pick up their computer by ther Video lead? Looks no more flimsey than a USB connector to me.
Looks the same crack as a usb jobbet to be fair tho.... so realistically how many of them do you fubar in the life of the MoBo or device?
There seems to be a trend for flimsy, poorly designed connectors at the moment - look at S-ATA for example I mean even USB cables fit more tightly, and they're supposed to be easily removable, where as in most applications S-ATA connections are semi-permanent (how often do you unplug your hard drive?!).
You've got to see it up close and just insert a HDMI cable inot it to see if it is flimsy... doubt it is, USB ports seem to be held on by PVA glue and they stay in place alright...
Western Digital have some secure SATA cables (I use them on my raptors) which are really nice (but only work on WD drives sadly ) But I agree.. WTF with the flimsy connectors??
I like the "flimsy" cables better than the old IDE- I could sling some of my old hard-drives and CD-ROMs around by their IDE cable. So far, my SATA (only 1) cables have been fitting good. L J
yup, pisses me off to. although i did manage to break the connector on one of my hdd's as i was trying to put an ide cable into one of the stupidly 90degree mounted ide ports on my abit board!
Also got to agree with the above. Not that i've had a problem, but I'm very cautious with SATA connectors as they're only just a tiny bit of plastic with little or no support. Terrible design really...
HMDI is fairly secure. It sits in it snugly...kinda like USB. Head down to your local store with an HDTV display floor and check it out for yourself.
I don't agree. All HDMI sockets i have "played" with have been flimsy. Decent HDMI cables and big and heavy the cables don't flex very much, its terrible for the socket. Why cant we have another DVI/VGA/D-Sub etc sort of connector? No reason why not. Its far more secure and can take far more strain. Oh and it goes in about 1/2 the depth of a USB cable.... which is just silly.
pff... Flimsy connectors? How many of you have taken apart (and put together) laptops? Go try that, and THEN we can talk abut flimsy connectors. But seriously. Most connectors today are good enough for their use. (exept for SATA connectors, wich is supposed to work as an external connector aswell) The best ones are still the D-sub connectors.
Odd, the ones I've messed around with felt pretty secure to me. Had no qualms or worries about the weight of the cable pulling it free from it's connection.
I broke the connector off a WD Raptor ages ago (36GB one, when they were still £130 or so each) so I'm somewhat bitter about S-ATA cables being flimsy
Woo, tiny ribbon cables rock. Sata cables are the only ones that piss me off currently, there are plenty of poor designs that have failed over time but sata is the current poor connection.
