    Guys and gals,
Can anyone recommend me a cheap(ish) video capture lead/device thingy that can plug into a laptop/surface pro 3 via USB and record a video source via HDMI?

I have something that I need to keep for ever and ever and ever from my Sky HD box and I don't have a DVD recorder and not going to buy one as I don't own any physical media disks anymore.

Thanks in advance my learned friends :thumb:

What is it that you need to keep for ever and ever? There are a whole host of legal ramifications around recording stuff from a Sky HD box, just starting with the copyright and ownership of the materials that you want to copy. There's also the issue of HDCP too - I'm not sure if the Sky boxes use this, if so you'd need to remove it before you could record anything.

Legal issues aside, there are devices that will record from HDMI, mainly made for gamers (Hauppauge do a range) - but they're quite expensive (over £100) and I'm not sure it's worth it just for one video.

It might be easier to acquire the programme from an 'alternative' source rather than go through the hassle of doing it yourself...
