    Hi everyone,

I recently upgraded the motherboard, processor, ram and hard drive of my system, main components are as follows:

    Case - Silverstone LC-20
    Motherboard - Asus P6X58D-E
    CPU - Core i7 930
    RAM - 6 GB Corsair XMS3 1600 mhz
HDDs - Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB (OS installed on this), Hitachi 2TB, Seagate 1TB.
    OS - Window 7 Professional 64 Bit
    Chassis Fans - 4 x Sharkoon 80mm fans
    Power Supply - Corsair TX650W
    Graphics Card - HIS Radeon HD4670 1GB

I am currently using the Intel cpu cooler, as my Arctic Freezer 7 rev B (from my previous build) was awful - turns out that the base of the heatsink is alot smaller than the top of the i7 cpu!

Anyway, I was hoping for recommendations for a cpu cooler of similar size to the arctic freezer7, as I don't think my case will take a larger cooler - certainly not those with 120mm fans!

    Any help greatly appreciated :D

If height is an issue how about a Scythe Big Shuriken?

Checked it out, Just worried that it may have trouble cooling the core i7. The review I saw said it struggled with the Core 2 Quad QX9650. The other thing is that it's another cooler that's compatible with numerous socket designs. Does that mean that it will have the same baseplate size issues as the Freezer 7?

The C2Q QX9650 has a TDP of 130W! It's one of the hottest chips to come out over the past few years. The i7-930 is pretty cool running in comparison.

Take into consideration the age of the Freezer 7, it's pretty darn old. The Scythe shouldn't have issues with covering the entire chip.

I've tried and tested many air coolers over the years, the best one by far and the one i use at the minute is the Zalman CNPS10X Extreme CPU Cooler.

Even with it set to Balance it cools my cpu amazingly well. Idling right now @ 28C and has never ever gone over 48C and thats running Prime95 for 7 hours.

This is with an AMD Phenom II 955BE clocked @ 3.6GHz, i've run this chip @ 4GHz aswell and the temps were still really good. Using AS MX-3 with it.

    Dimensions: 94mm x 100mm x 160.0mm

Not really low profile is it? 16cm would probably not fit in his case.

I would recommend the Thermaltake ISGC-400.

It's got a low profile, and whilst it's not the best at cooling, it'll certainly take your temperatures down a bit (CPU is i7-920 so is comparable)

Fitting a high-airflow fan improves it further -

Thanks for the replies, will look into the thermaltake solution.

I have measured the height from the pcb of the motherboard to the top of my case, and it is 143mm. So I guess a cooler with a height of 140mm is fine, or smaller.

I have looked at a couple of scythe products: The Ninja Mini rev. B (allows a 92mm fan to be fitted), Zipang 2 and Kabuto. Does anyone know how these perform with the i7?

I'm guessing that the Kabuto may not be a good choice as there would be only a small clearance between the fan and the top of the case.

That quiet pc link was very informative, thanks. :D

Just a thought. Is a thermalright ultima 90 with an lga1366 conversion kit and 92mm fan going to be good for cooling the i7 930? The reason I ask is that it would be nice to run the cpu at 3.6 ghz.

I read reviews of the ultima 90, and it's supposed to be an excellent heat sink, and appears to be the largest heat sink that will fit my case - presumably therefore offering the best cooling.

I remember the review on the coolit domino.. I wouldn't want that

nice chart though bakes.. have the thermalright 120ex- it's decent but has the round base issue.. you have to pretty much lap the thing

I used a Scythe BIG and it worked fine on my E8600, very low too I think it was around 58mm high. Now I'm using the Freezer 7 Pro Low Profile and that works well too, and keeps the CPU 1-2 degrees cooler than what the BIG did. Both are quiet, though I think the Freezer 7 is slightly the quieter of the two, and around a third of the price. Bear in mind though that I have socket 775, I couldn't tell you how good they would be on 1366.

Edit: Just realised yuou don't need coolers as low as these so something a little bigger should perform better.

    Thanks all.

I'm a little wary of the lga775 coolers on lga1366. The Freezer 7 that I had on my previous Core 2 E8400 allowed an overclock to 3.6 Ghz and was pretty quiet with low temperatures. However, the rev 2 of the same cooler was actually worse at cooling than the stock intel cooler, or at least that's how it appeared.

From your suggestions and some research that I've done, the following are what I have shortlisted:

    Scythe Kabuto
Scythe Ninja Mini - rev B
    Scythe Zipang 2
    Thermalrright AXP-140RT
    Thermaltake ISGC-400

As there are a few Scythe products, I have emailed them to ask what they recommend as the better cooler (out of the Scythe coolers). I quite like the idea that the Ninja Mini can have a 92mm fan fitted and possibly 2 fans in a push-pull configuration, although obviously no idea whether that brings much benefit over just having a single 92mm fan.

It's a shame that there aren't many intermediate sized heat sinks of around 140ish mm height, as that would offer the best cooling in my particular case. Obviously there's probably not enough demand for that size of cooler, I guess.

Anyway, does anyone have experience with any of the above coolers on i7?

Hi everyone, just to say thanks for your suggestions.

After alot of scouring the internet, I found the best solution for me - Noctua NH-U9B SE2 Dual Fan Quiet CPU Cooler.

It gets very good reviews and will fit easily in my case.

    Thanks again for your help!
