I bought this registered ECC DDR memory for my A7A (1GHz stock Athlon T-bird): CORSAIR 512MB DDR PC2100 64Mx72 ECC 184 DIMM registered CAS2.5 64Mx4 DRAMs Low-profile The chips are Nanya. I installed it, and nothing (no beeps, no video, power LED flashes). Put the old memory back in, flashed the lateset BIOS, and nothing. Tried 1 stick. Nothing. The other. Nothing. Switched the mystery jumper. Nothing. I looked at the manual and, it indicates that registered and unbuffered should work, but only states "non-ECC". From the manual (italics are mine): So after reading the manual, the only thing I was not sure of was the ECC/non ECC. In this link of "approved" memory from ASUS' site there are plenty of both the ECC and non ECC types: http://www.cmtlabs.com/Quicksearch/ASUS/Mbd_Dyna.asp?st=a7a266 Now that I look at that list more closely, I see that all of them are "unbuffered", but the manual sure says "registered". This list of Crucial stuff that comes up for the A7A is "Unbuffered" and "non-parity". Two problems with buying from Crucial: 1) They can't do the 512MB DDR sticks yet: Looking for 512MB DDR modules? 2) I am trying to get a "really stable system" and I really wanted the ECC and register to help in that aspect. Here is another weird piece: The Viking memory configurator shows both ECC and non-ECC, but only unbuffered, no "registered" shown. This seems to conflict with the manual, which specifically states registered or unbuffered, and says "non-ECC". http://config.vikingcomponents.com/products/detail.asp?ConfigID=18992&model=A7A266 So what I would like is: 1) Use DDR with this A7A 2) To put 1G in this system (though I am willing to settle for 512M now). 3) use ECC if it is possible-for stability 4) use registered if it is possible-for stability Can anyone give me suggestions or experience with DDR on the A7A? Can anyone give me a definitive answer on the ECC/non-ECC with the A7A? Can anyone give me a definitive answer on the registered/unbuffered with the A7A? Thanks in advance for your help. | Brent A. So I bought a couple of 512 MB sticks of Viking DDR266/PC2100 DIMM unbuffered ECC. The box is marked "AS6472DDR 512MB U": Popped them both in and it counts to 768M. The one labeled "12414353" only detects as 256M. Nuts. I guess it goes back. Well, at least I know that it is possible to load two sticks of PC2100 unbuffered ECC in this MB.
