My Incar pc has been misbehaving lately. When playing WMA files the processor usage keeps going up to 100% and the cpu temp goes up to 75-80ºC. I thought at first it was a software problem and tried lots of things ending in completly formatting the hard drive and reinstalling windows without letting it do any updates just to rule them out. It hasn't helped Its also started doing it on normal windows operations now (installing programs) but it will quite happily play dvds or even WMV files. Its really annoying me as the touch screen arrived for the car last week so I can finnaly get it in the car (been using it as a media pc for the past 6 months). Spec: Via Epia Mini ITX M10000 Motherboard 512Mb Ram (can't remember the make) Opus 120W DC-DC power board Seagate ST94011A 40GB 2.5" Hard drive Panasonic DVD/CD-RW CW-8123-B Optical drive Noritake T23A VFD Edit: 128Mb Sapphire 9200SE 3D card (PCI) USB Gps mouse (not installed after the format) Any Ideas as to whats wrong? If you need to know anything else please ask Thanks
Forgot the software Windows XP (was completely upto date untill it was formatted and reinstalled) Windows media player 10 (tried 9 as well). Microsoft autoroute 2005 WinDVD player 6 MBM5
No dust As far as I know the Heat sink hasn't moved since the motherboard was assembled by via but I will check it.
Its quite happily playing constantine on dvd at the mo and the CPU usage is around 70% and around 60ºC with a case temp of 16ºC
Na it pulls the air through well. It only gets to 75-80ºC because the CPU is going nuts and I can't stop it very quickly as I have to wait for it to respond or unplug it which I don't like doing. I'm trying to work out what would cause it to only play up on certain files and so far the memory is the only thing i can think of. I checked the HS and its still firmly attached and won't move one bit so I don't think thats the problem.
I've seen a video from VIA which shows the heatsink taken off the chip and it still running - I only say this because that chip couldn't have been running much hotter than 80 / 90 C. Maybe a speed bump or something has moved the heatsink. So yeah, I agree with most people above. Also want to add the fact that some AVI files force the CPU to run at 100% - something to do with them not being encoded quite right. Don't really know anymore information on that one except I originally read about it on www.tweakxp.com Good luck, 'tis a snazzy comp
80C, that thing should be cooked. Are you sure thats not possible F, or your sensorse are wrong. Can you touch your HS for more than 5 seconds while its supposedly at this 80C?
I will take the heat sink off when I get back from work this evening and reseat it to make sure its not come loose. I'm sure the temps sensors are showing the wrong temp but its still getting higher than it used too. I haven't tried touching it when it was at that temp but it was very warm when I checked it afterwards. The northbridge was too. It played the exact same files fine then a month ago started doing it with just WMA files (I only put it in the car last week to test the setup, and apart from music everything else worked perfectly). Last night before I switched it off I opend WMP with out opening any media and it kept hitt 100% CPU usage doing nothing haven't had time to check it again this morning
I took the CPU heatsink off and the northbridge/ southbridge heatsink off and used some new silver thermal compound on them (the CPU was only partly covered with the standard stuff). This has helped with the max temps, max it got to was 72ºC after a good 10 mins at 95%+ CPU usage. It doesn't seem to hit 100% usage as much but still sits around 95%. As soon as you shut down the WMA file the CPU usage drops down to normal.
