    Hi guys,

I've historically been a desktop kinda guy. I've generally shunned laptops as I've never really needed mobile computing.

However I'm now in the market for a decent laptop as it'll help with my job and also the fact that I'm living between two houses atm!

Main uses will be light gaming (nothing too modern or demanding) and media consumption (the occasional HD video, music etc). Obviously I'll be knocking around the intertubes too but you can pretty much do that on a claculator these days!! :D

I'd like as much power as I can get for my money nontheless though. However this has got to be balanced with reasonable battery life (for train journeys mainly so 2-3 hours should suffice) and heat build-up.

My budget is £500 maximum. I've seen these two bad boys so far:

    Asus A53E-SX1339S and Samsung NP300E5A-A02DX.

has anyone had any experience with either of these? What about price/performance etc?

The specs look pretty good but I'm interested in real-world performance. I'm also wondering about build quality etc. My g/f has a Compaq Presario CQ60 and - although it performs well - it's badly designed in terms of cooling. It shuts down after about 30-40mins of use if it's placed on a table as the HSF vent on the bottom gets covered up. You have to hang it off the end of the table if you want it to stay cool. This is the kind of nonsense I'll want to be avoiding for a £500 outlay!!

So, what do you think? Or can anyone suggest any good alternatives to the two I've listed above?

    Thanks in advance! :)

didnt see a GPU listed for either of those.
Best bet in that price range is ebay for used laptop like a Asus ROG or DELL Alienware.
With Gaming laptops you can forget using battery power any way so that doesnt matter either.

Ah, perhaps I confused the issue by listing light gaming as one of the main uses. This isn't really the case. I'll primarily be using it for work - nothing more demanding than document editing, administering a website and the occasional bit of DTP.

Gaming and media consumption would be secondary and less often/important uses tbh. The most demanding game I ever play is GTA IV and I've got my main rig for stuff like that. Anything I'd play on the laptop would be a lot less resource intensive even than that. We're not talking BF3 on ultra here :D

I can't find out what graphics chips are on-board on those machines though. All I know is they're UMA which isn't exactly cutting edge but should still be able to handle the odd old game... depending on the specific chipset.
