i think i have the worst luck. amoung many other things that have happened to my computer something tottaly crap-tac-ular just happened. the three wires that go to the fan on my heatsink for intel all fell off. well more less i accedently jerked them out while adjusting some cable looming. anyways i have searched everywhere and can not find my soldering gun to reattatch them. would everything stay cool if i ghetto'd a spare case fan over top of the now non-working fan on my heatsink?
i think i'm starting to make myself sound like a huge idiot on here. this is the forth time in probably 2 weeks i have come to the forum to get help for my screw ups
Just buy a new fan, remove the old one from the top of the heatsink (it should just be screwed on) then put the new one in it's place. Simple. And don't worry, everyone makes mistakes.
If it's a stock intel HSF, the fan will be integrated into the unit... You might want to try dremeling it out, and then putting an 80mm fan on top... But then, tou won't be able to solder the fan wires back on unless you bondo the fan back on or something... AAAAHHH!!!
...or you could buy a cheap hs & hsf off ebuyer for a few quid/maybe 10 dollars (don't know whether you're a brit or an american) which would be safer than taking a dremel to the heatsink, as you might affect the performance.
I think he means just the retention bracket. Personally I'd get a whole new heatsink, but ghettoing another fan on top after getting out the stock one somehow should be fine. Finally, someone else who uses the word craptacular
you could try ratshack for a fan but i would recomend a new fan. its probably going to be easier and cheaper. then when you have your new heastink you can chop your old one for ram sinks
