I've just installed the FileZilla FTP server on my computer, using default options during the install and during the setup.

I am behind a wired router and I use the DynDNS feature of the router to keep a DNS address. I've forwarded port 21 to my computer. When I try to connect to the FTP server using either the DNS or my external IP, the FTP client will just sit at "Waiting for welcome message" for two minutes until the connection times out. This is true whether I'm connecting from a computer on the same network or a computer elsewhere.

However, a computer on the same network, connecting to the internal IP of the server, connects and runs perfectly, so I know the server is set up correctly. It's just not getting through the router.

I can ping both my external IP and my DNS successfully, and as I said, the port is forwarded. Ideas or suggestions?

you need to forward port 20 as well ya know. Also you may want to forward a range of passive ports for it.

Along with that, you have to open ports on your firewall for both Filezilla Server, and Filezilla Server Interface.

I've got ports 20-22 open for FTP and ports 5000-5100 open for passive mode, and the server .exe is in my firewall allowed sites. Still nothing.

Tulatin: Why do I need to open ports for the admin interface? I'm not trying to use it externally.

I think your isp might have blocked port 21, so you can't host a ftp server.

*shrugs* it just behaves for me that way. Don't forget to set FileZilla to use your external IP for passive mode.

Well, I've set my router to forward 20-22, 5000-5100, and the admin interface port, and I've added the server and the interface to the XP firewall list. If I run a port check from http://whatsmyip.org/ports/, it appears that 21 is open and nothing else is.

At this point, when I connect from outside the connection will go through just fine and looks like it's going to work, but after a few seconds the ftp client tries to switch to passive mode and it drops the connection.

As a test, I temporarily disabled the firewall and got the same result. And yes, passive is set to use my external IP.
