i cant get any over clock to except 3.2ghz i have 6x1333mhz ram and 920 D0 with watercoolerd cpu and aleinware motherboard cheers
The Alienware motherboard is almost definitely the limiting factor. The vast vast majority of OEM pc's have rubbish overclocking abilities due to their awful motherboards. :/ You'd have to get a new motherboard & the best value one at the moment is the Gigabyte GA-X58-UD3R.
hang on before you do that how big is your mothboard as i know some use matx boards and some use atx boards so what is yours?
It's sad to see people duped into buying Alienware machines when they are getting premium components when all your getting is substandard parts that can't overclock.
I'm not too familiar with the Alienware boards so can't comment on them. We all like big overclocks ... but an i7-920 @3.2GHz won't be holding you back at all ... unless you're hardcore into video encoding or some such and absolutely positively need the extra juice. It won't push your games into unplayable minimum frame rates or anything.
Based on the three separate threads you've made about the same i920 overclocking/Alienware-thing, you aren't really getting anywhere with the OC any time soon. First thing would be to get rid of the Alienware motherboard, but the memories that come in those setups aren't probably any good either. Would you like to OC just for the heck of it, or do you actually need the extra performance?
Thanks for te helpful reply, well any Performance improvement is good for anyone and I enjoy learning about it, I managed 3.8ghz aonim happy with that the alienware mobo actually really easy to navigate and has no restrictions at all Can go upto 300mhz , but thanks for help 3.8gz > 2.6 noticeably quicker, may try 4gz for hel of it.
How did you only manage 3.2GHz before but now you've got 3.8GHz? Was it a simple matter of adding extra voltage or did you do something else to overcome the apparent 3.2GHz limit you said you had?
Which voltage were you changing? If you need any help overclocking look at this guide: http://www.overclockers.com/3-step-guide-overclock-core-i3-i5-i7/ It's the guide I used for my first overclock & I havn't had any problems since.
If it's the lack of settings in the BIOS thats the problem then phone Alienware, they will be able to give you the key combination to unlock the BIOS into the full version so you can overclock normally.
