Wrap it around the wire and heat up the heatshrink, using a lighter or so. It will shrink to its place.
thanks. also i have some cable sleeving how do i get it around the plugs like the big motherbaord one? do i take all the wires out of the plastic?
Yep. Just make sure you put it back the right way. It is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT you do so, otherwise bang goes the components! Take a photo of the pin layout first, just to be sure. And make sure that when you put them back, put them back firmly.
if you make sure you mark every pin, it's pretty easy and nothing should go wrong. I just make little markings on the pin with a marker that I use to write on cds or dvds. Start at one end of the connector. First wire of every color gets one dot, second two dots etc. Just make sure you write down where to put the wires
Seebul, The question of sleeving the ATX cable was asked in this forum qiute sometime ago. If you do not have a ATX connector pin remover, you might want to try this alternative. Twist the connector 90 degrees sideways and insert the cable sleeving. Wrap the connector in tape to avoid the sharp edges and the connector key from damaging the sleeving. I've done this method and it works. This tip was provided by ElThomsono. ARM
i guess im the only one that would think to use a heat gun for heatshrink tubing? as it provides very even and steady heat, but has a lesser tendancy to catch things on fire
well, i dont have a heat gun, but i tried out using a lighter on the last load of heat shrinking i had to do, and it is brilliant *Converted*
I've been converted to using a heat gun.. They provide a much more uniform heat, and shrinks the tubing much more evenly, without burn marks.. You can pick up a cheap gun at walmart for under 20 bucks.. Or just use a lighter and be careful..
if you are soldering something u can slip the heatshrink up to the joint right after you solder it and the solder will make the heatshrink go around it really good. I use a heatgun when im doing a bunch wires, but when m only doing a couple i use a lighter or the soldering iron.
i use a soldering iron, really easy, and if you can get some of the plastic on the wire to melt, it sticks and can't be removed, which can be useful. Second, if you are sleeving ATX cable, cut the right length of tube (whatever you are using, then take out one pin from the connector, put it through the tube, then put it back in the connector, that way you will never have a mini fireworks display inside your computer and it doesnt take any longer.
i rub it against my rock hard abs, i'm so hot and sexy the heat shrink actually melts unless i evaporate a 10 lb block of dry ice a few seconds before i rub the heat shrink. but thats just me. for the rest of you (i cal you "normies") holding a bic lighter in one spot and slowly getting closer to the tubing will make the heat build up, but not burn it. move the lighter closer to the one spot until it starts to shrink, this is the distance you must hold the lighter. just drag back and forth until it completely shrinks. it doesn't even darken if you do it right.
i tried that technique with my pocket blowtorch, didnt work so well. i guess the word im looking for is " incinerated" the heatshrink, and unsoldered the 2 wires at the same time, so i had to start again. lol dont use a blowtorch for heatshrink!
