if money is no obstacle, you should go with the ATi x800 XT cards, or the nVidia 6800GT/ultra.

the 9800XT is a very good mid/high end card though, and is fine to play far cry and doom3 with high settings at reasonably high resolutions.

The problem with the 9800XT is that is now way overpriced for its performance level relative to the newer cards...looks towards the 6800 and X800 lines of cards if you want to spend that kind of money. The plain 6800 will get you better peformance for a 20% lower price.

Lots of people seem to be buying 9800XTs at the moment, just when it's at its worst value for money ever. The 6800 outperforms it and is cheaper, the 9800 Pro is barely behind in performance and is far cheaper. Go with one of those, or if you want a card that will tide you over for a long time (at least until AGP is phased out in favour of PCI-E) then go with a 6800GT, or an X800 Pro VIVO if you fancy your luck with the BIOS flash.

    Precisely.

    * 9800XT is capable of playing even the most demanding games very well but is over-priced.

    * 9800Pro offers almost all the perf at a much lower price, plus it o/c's well too.

    * Don't pay through the nose for 256MB, it's nice but not that beneficial esp considering pricing.

    * The 6800 (std) is easily superior to the 9800XT and unlike the XT o/c's well too.

    * The 6800GT is the bee's knees at the mo, should be priced close to the 9800XT.

    * X800 cards are still very good but nVidia have the slight edge in most people's humble opinion.

    * PCIe will replace AGP despite real perf gains being essentially zero. It doesn't make sense to lay down too much cash for AGP.

    * The new top-end cards (6800 & X800) really need a top-end CPU to show what they can do, don't stifle it if you get one.

I'd go either x800Pro or 9800Pro and overclock it like mad, depending on your budget. And as the x800Pro's aren't a huge amount more than a 9800xt but are about twice the performance... I'd go for that. Well I'd go for an x800XT since I don't wanna take a chance with a pro not converting, but that's me. But I'd recommend getting an x800pro.

:hip: GeCube is the new name for GigaCube (IIRC) so has been around for ages AND has a good name. Brand matters little anyway, look at price, bundle and warranty. If the 6800 & X800 are over-priced go for the 9800Pro, the 128MB is very fast and should be very cheap. If you post your location or more ideally prices where you shop we can be of more help.

Best one to get is X800pro/xt or 6800GT tbh... but hey you can always find 9800XT's used for ~150£ :cooldude: I don't think that's over-priced at all and its half of the price of a X800 or 6800...

About all those who want to upgrade their vga's and want to play games like Doom3 and HL2... those two top cards from Nvidia and Ati is the only one to get if you want to play the game at Ultra qulity, 1280x1024 and x16 aa ;)

Otherwise a 9800XT will play Doom3 decently at 1024x768, high quality and about x2-x4(max) aa.

I've just flashed to a GeCube 9800 XT BIOS and it runs fine on stock and overclock wells. For the price difference i'd just get a 9800 Pro.

:thumb: Ultra quality is pointless, you really need a 512MB consumer gfx card (not even out yet) and even then the IQ difference between Ultra and Hi Quality is virtually zero, but the perf hit is big. The diff between Medium and Hi Quality is very small too, but most decent cards can handle Hi Quality mode with very minimal impact. With a remotely decent CPU the 9800XT can play Doom III very well at 1024 and 8xAF (if not 1280), the general concensus is that AA is not worth the hit for Doom III. The 6800GT can easily play 1280 with 8xAF, probably even 1600.

Ultra quality needs 256mb on the vga and 1gig on the mobo because it loads many very high quality settings as i've heard, hence with only 512mb DDR is not sufficient for Ultra settings.
6800GT's or Ultra's can play Doom3 fine even with x16 aa! i'm telling ya, it's like Living In the game :D

On my 9800xt it seems that i'm getting some short black squares on the screen :eyebrow: with the aa at 4x or more... hope Ati will fix this with new drivers.

 You can run the pointless Ultra Quality mode on any card but 512MB gfx RAM is heavily recommended by iD. With a 256MB this would presumably mean it would need 512MB AGP Aperture which could then use 512MB of system RAM to provide the card with nearly 256MB of extra texture storage. The perf hit by doing that is large no matter how large or fast your system memory is. Seriously there's no point going past High Quality mode.

:thumb: Are you sure you mean 16xAA and not 16xAF? AA removes jaggies, AF makes textures look sharper esp those further away from the view point. IIRC 6xAA is as high as ATI cards go and even that is only very marginally better than 4xAA but with a much bigger perf hit. nVidia cards can also go higher than 4xAA too but it's again pretty pointless esp as they add in Super-Sampling AA which really hurts perf.

Yeh dynno what happens, when i set form doom3 settings 4xAA (no AF at all) those black squares apear on the game...
Had those black squares even with 2xAA but i had forgot to install directx9c.. now with directx9 installed it handles only up to 2xAA.

Select FSAA via the driver control panel - application FSAA in DOOM 3 isn't great at all... 8xAF is automatically set at High-Quality in DOOM 3 and you can increase it by forcing from the Driver CP.
